संजय उवाच सोमदत्तं तु सम्प्रेक्ष्य विधुन्वानं महद् धनुः। सात्यकिः प्राह यन्तारं सोमदत्ताय मां वह।।॥

Sanjaya said Seeing Somadatta angrily shake his great bow, Satyaki said to his charioteer “Bear me towards Somadatta.

Drona Parva 162.1

न ह्यहत्वा रणे शत्रु सोमदत्तं महाबलम्। निवर्तिध्ये रणात् सूत सत्यमेतद् वचो मम॥

O charioteer, I will not return from battle today without killing my enemy-the vilest of the Kurus, the son of Valhika. These my words are true.

Drona Parva 162.2

ततः सम्प्रेषयद् यन्ता सैन्धवांस्तान् मनोजवान्। तुरङ्गमाञ्छववर्णान् सर्वशब्दातिगान् रणे॥

Thereupon, (his) charioteer drove to the battle those horses oi' Sindhu breed endowed with great fleetness, having the colour of the conch and capable of bearing all the weapons.

Drona Parva 162.3

तेऽवहन् युयुधानं तु मनोमारुतरंहसः। यथेन्द्रं हरयो राजन् पुरा दैत्यवधोद्यतम्॥

Those (steeds), fleet as the mind or the wind, carried Yuyudhana (to the field of battle) as the horses of Indra, O king, had, in days of yore, born him who was preparing to slay the Asuras.

Drona Parva 162.4

तमापतन्तं सम्प्रेक्ष्य सात्वतं रभसं रणे। सोमदत्तो महाबाहुरसम्भ्रान्तो न्यवर्तत॥

Beholding Sattyata quickly proceed against him to battle, Somadatta, O mighty monarch, confronted him undauntedly.

Drona Parva 162.5

विमुञ्चञ्छरवर्षाणि पर्जन्य इव वृष्टिमान्। छादयामास शैनयं जलदो भास्करं यथा॥

Discharging a shower of arrows as the clouds (pour down) torrents of rain, he (i.e., Somadatta) covered the grandson of Sini like the clouds (covering the sun)

Drona Parva 162.6

असम्भ्रान्तश्च समरे सात्यकिः कुरुपुङ्गवम्। छादयामास बाणौधैः समन्ताद् भरतर्षभ॥

0 best of the Bharatas, the dauntless Satyaki also completely covered that most exalted the Kurus with arrowy showers in that battle.

Drona Parva 162.7

सोमदत्तस्तु तं षष्ट्या विव्याघोरसि माधवम्। सात्यकिश्चापि तं राजन्नविध्यत् सायकैः शितैः॥

Somadatta also pierced the descendant of Madhu in the chest with sixty arrows. Satyaki, too, O king, pierced him with keen darts.

Drona Parva 162.8

तावन्योन्यं शरैः कृत्तौ व्यराजेतां नरर्षभौ। सुपुष्यौ पुष्पसमये पुष्पिताविव किंशुकौ॥

Pierced by each other with each other's arrows, they looked like two blossoming Kinsuka trees in the following season.

Drona Parva 162.9

रुधिरोक्षितसर्वाङ्गौ कुरुवृष्णियशस्करौ। परस्परमवेक्षेतां दहन्ताविव लोचनैः॥

With their bodies covered all over with blood, those two renowned descendants of Kuru and Vrishni eyed at each other as it (desirous of) consuming each other with their glances.

Drona Parva 162.10

रथमण्डलमार्गेषु चरन्तावरिमर्दनौ। घोररूपौ हि तवास्तां वृष्टिमन्ताविवाम्बुदौ॥

Those two dreadful-looking grinder of foes ranging on their cars coursing in circles, looked like two clouds pouring (torrents of) rain.

Drona Parva 162.11

शरसम्भिन्नगात्रौ तु सर्वतः शकलीकृतौ। श्वाविधाविव राजेन्द्र दृश्यतां शरविक्षतौ॥

With their bodies pierced, mangled and wounded with shafts, they looked, O king of kings, like two hedge hogs.

Drona Parva 162.12

सुवर्णपुङ्खरिषुभिराचितौ तौ व्यराजताम्। खद्योतैरावृतौ राजन् प्रावृषीव वनस्पती॥

Pierced with shafts endued with golden wings, those two (heroes), O monarch, looked as (beautiful) two lords of the forest covered with glow-worms during the rainy season.

Drona Parva 162.13

सम्प्रदीपितसर्वाङ्गौ सायकैस्तैर्महारथौ। अदृश्येतां रणे क्रुद्धावुल्काभिरिव कुञ्जरौ॥

Their bodies looking resplendent with arrows (they were pierced with) those two great car-warriors appeared in that battle, like two furious elephants with their bodies covered all over with (blazing) meteors.

Drona Parva 162.14

ततो युधि महाराज सोमदत्तो महारथः। अर्धचन्द्रेण चिच्छेद माधवस्य महद् धनुः॥

Then, O great monarch, in that encounter, the mighty car-warrior Somadatta cut-off with cresent-shaped arrows the great bow of the descendant of Madhu.

Drona Parva 162.15

अथैनं पञ्चविंशत्या सायकानां समार्पयत्। त्वरमाणस्त्वरकाले पुनश्च दशभिः शरैः॥

(He) then pierced him with twenty five darts and at that time when speed was (urgently) necessary, he again speedily pierced him with ten (more) arrows.

Drona Parva 162.16

अथान्यद् धनुरादाय सात्यकिर्वेगवत्तरम्। पञ्चभिः सायकैस्तूर्णं सोमदत्तमविध्यत॥

Thereupon Satyaki, taking up a very strong bow, speedily pierced Somadatta with five arrows.

Drona Parva 162.17

ततोऽपरेण भल्लेन ध्वजं चिच्छेद काञ्चनम्। बाह्रीकस्य रणे राजन् सात्यकिः प्रहसन्निव॥

Then again, Oking, Satyaki, as if with a smile in that battle, cut down with another broad-headed shafts the golden standard of the son of Balhika.

Drona Parva 162.18

सोमदत्तस्त्वसम्भ्रान्तो दृष्ट्वा केतुं निपातितम्। शैनेयं पञ्चविंशत्या सायकानां समाचिनोत्॥

Seeing his standard cut down Somadatta fearlessly pierced the grandson of Sini with twenty-five arrows.

Drona Parva 162.19

सात्वतोऽपि रणे क्रुद्धः सोमदत्तस्य धन्विनः। धनुचिच्छेद भल्लेन क्षुरप्रेण शितेन ह॥

Filled with wrath, Satyaki also, in that engagement, cut-off with a keen and razorfaced shaft, the bow of the (great) bowman Somadatta.

Drona Parva 162.20

अथैनं रुक्मपुङ्खानां शतेन नतपर्वणाम्। आचिनोद वहुधा राजन भग्नदंष्ट्रमिव द्विपम्॥

He then, O great king, pierced him (i.e. Somadatta), who then looked like a snake with its fangs broken, with one hundred straightcoursing arrows furnished with golden wings.

Drona Parva 162.21

अथान्यद् धनुरादाय सोमदत्तो महारथः। सात्यकि छादयामास शरवृष्ट्या महाबलः॥

Thereupon the greatly puissant Somadatta, the great car-warrior, taking up another bow, covered Satyaki with downpours of shafts.

Drona Parva 162.22

सोमदत्तं तु संक्रुद्धो रणे विव्याध सात्यकः। सात्यकिं शरजालेन सोमदत्तोऽप्यपीड्यत्॥

Satyaki also, getting greatly excited with wrath, pierced Somadatta in that battle. Somadatta, on his part, afflicted Satyaki with showers of arrows.

Drona Parva 162.23

दशभिः सात्वतस्यार्थे भीमोऽहन् बाह्निकात्मजम्। सोमदत्तोऽप्यसम्भ्रान्तो भीममाईच्छितैः शरैः॥

Bhima also, for the sake of Sattvata, struck the son of Valhika with ten arrows. And the dauntless Somadatta also pierced Bhima with sharpened arrows.

Drona Parva 162.24

ततस्तु सात्वतस्यार्थे भीमसेनो नवं दृढम्। मुमोच परिघं घोरं सोमदत्तस्य वक्षसि॥

Thereupon Satyaki, excited with wrath, discharged at the chest of Somadaita. a new, strong and formidable Parigha furnished with a golden handle.

Drona Parva 162.25

तमापतन्तं वेगेन परिघं घोरदर्शनम्। द्विधा चिच्छेद समरे प्रहसन्निव कौरवः॥

(But the descendant of Kuru), as if with a smile, cut-off into two parts, in that engagement, that dreadful-looking Parigha so it was advancing against him.

Drona Parva 162.26

स पपात द्विधाछिन्न आयसः परिघो महान्। महीधरस्येव महच्छिखरं वज्रदारितम्॥

Thus severed into two parts, that great Parigha of iron, fell down (on the ground) like the great peak of a mountain riven by thunder.

Drona Parva 162.27

ततस्तु सात्यकी राजन् सोमदत्तस्य संयुगे। धनुश्चिच्छेद भल्लेन हस्तावापं च पञ्चभिः॥

Then, in the engagement, o king, Satyaki cut-off the bow of Somadatta with one broadheaded arrows and with another five the leathern case that sheathed his fingers.

Drona Parva 162.28

ततश्चतुर्भिश्च शरैस्तूर्णं तांस्तुरगोत्तमान्। समीपं प्रेषयामास प्रेतराजस्य भारत॥

Then with four darts he speedily sent before the lord of the departed spirit the four excellent horses (of Somadatta).

Drona Parva 162.29

सारथेश्च शिरः कायाद् भल्लेन नतपर्वणा। जहार नरशार्दूलः प्रहसञ्छिनिपुङ्गवः॥

And, O Bharata, that foremost of carwarriors, as if with a smile, cut-off, with a broad-headed and straight-coursing arrow, the head of his charioteer from the trunk.

Drona Parva 162.30

ततः शरं महाघोरं ज्वलन्तमिव पावकम्। मुमोच सात्वको राजन् स्वर्णपुङ्ख शिलाशितम्॥

He then discharged (at Somadatta himself) a highly dreadful arrow, blazing like the fire, furnished with golden wings, bathed in oil and sharpened on stone.

Drona Parva 162.31

स विमुक्तो बलवता शैनेयेन शरोत्तमः। घोरस्तस्योरसि विभो निपपाताशु भारत॥

Shot with great force by the grandson of Sini that excellent and formidable shaft, darted like a falcon, at the chest of Somadatta.

Drona Parva 162.32

सोऽतिविद्धो महाराज सात्वतेन महारथः। सोमदत्तो महाबाहुर्निपपात ममार च॥

The great car-warrior Somadatta, deeply pierced by the puissant Satvata, fell down (from his car) and died, O great king.

Drona Parva 162.33

तं दृष्ट्वा निहतं तत्र सोमदत्तं महारथाः। नहता शरवर्षेण युयुधानमुपाद्रवन्॥

Seeing Somadatta slain there, your soldiers proceeded against Yuyudhana with a large number of cars. arrowS

Drona Parva 162.34

छाद्यमानं शरैर्दृष्ट्वा युयुधानं युधिष्ठिरः। पाण्डवाश्च महाराज सह सर्वैः प्रभद्रकैः। महत्या सेनया साधु द्रोणानीकमुपाद्रवन्॥

The Pandavas also, O mighty monarch, accompanied by all the Prabhadrakas and by a large army, made a rush upon Drona's division.

Drona Parva 162.35

ततो युधिष्ठिरः क्रुद्धस्तावकानां महाबलम्। शरैर्विद्रावयामास भारद्वाजस्य पश्यतः॥

Then, Yudhishthira, filled with rage, began to crush the troops of the son of Bharadvaja with in the the very presence of Bharadvaja's son.

Drona Parva 162.36

सैन्यानि द्रावयन्तं तु द्रोणो दृष्ट्वा युधिष्ठिरम्। अभिदुद्राव वेगेन क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः॥

Seeing his troops troops put to rout by Yudhishthira, Drona, with eyes, blood-shot in wrath, furiously rushed against him.

Drona Parva 162.37

ततः सुनिशितैर्बाणैः पार्थ विव्याध सप्तभिः। युधिष्ठिरोऽपि संक्रुद्धः प्रतिविव्याध पञ्चभिः॥

Then, (Drona) pierced the son of Pritha with seven sharpened darts. Yudhishthira also, inflamed with rage, pierced him in return with five (arrows).

Drona Parva 162.38

सोऽतिविद्धो महाबाहुः सृक्विणी परिसंलिहन्। युधिष्ठिरस्य चिच्छेद ध्वजं कार्मुकमेव च॥

That mighty bowman, being (thus) deeply pierced, for a moment licked the corners of his mouth and (then) cut-off the standard and also the bow of Yudhishthira.

Drona Parva 162.39

स च्छिन्नधन्वा त्वरितस्त्वराकाले नृपोत्तमः। अन्यदादत्त वेगेन कार्मुकं समरे दृढम्॥

Deprived of his bows, that excellent king took up another tough and strong bow, with great speed when speed was highly necessary.

Drona Parva 162.40

ततः शरसहस्रेण द्रोणं विव्याध पार्थिवः। साश्वसूतध्वजरथं तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्॥

Then with a thousand shafts, the son of Pandu pierced Drona together with his horses, charioteer, standard and car and this (feat on the part of Yudhishthira) seemed marvellous.

Drona Parva 162.41

ततो मुहूर्त व्यथित शरपातप्रपीडितः। निषसाद स्थोपस्थे द्रोणो भरतसत्तम॥

In consequence of the strokes of those darts, Drona, the foremost of the Brahmanas, being (greatly) pained, sank unconsciously for a moment on the terrace of his car.

Drona Parva 162.42

प्रतिलभ्य ततः संज्ञां मुहूर्ताद् द्विजसत्तमः। क्रोधेन महताऽऽविष्टो वायव्यास्रमवासृजत्॥

Then regaining his consciousness, heaving sighs like a snake and excited with a terrible wrath, he brought into existence the weapon presided over by Vayu.

Drona Parva 162.43

असम्भ्रान्तस्ततः पार्थो धनुराकृष्य वीर्यवान्। ततस्तदसमस्रेण स्तम्भयामास भारत॥

But the dauntless and puissant son of Pritha, in that fight taking up his bow, checked the career of that weapon with one of his own.

Drona Parva 162.44

चिच्छेद च धनुदीर्घ ब्राह्मणस्य च पाण्डवः। ततोऽन्यद् धनुरादत्त द्रोणः क्षत्रियमर्दनः॥

And the son of Pandu also cut-off the large bow of that Brahamana. Drona, the grinder of the Kshatriyas then, having taken up another bow.

Drona Parva 162.45

तदप्यस्य शितैर्भल्लैश्चिच्छेद कुरुपुङ्गवः। ततोऽब्रवीद् वासुदेवः कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम्॥

युधिष्ठिर महाबाहो यत्त्वां वक्ष्यामि तच्छृणु। उपारमख युद्धे त्वं द्रोणाद् भरतसत्तम॥

"O mighty armed Yudhishthira, hear wihat I tell you. O foremost of the Bharatas, do not fight with Drona.

Drona Parva 162.47

यतते हि सदा द्रोणो ग्रहणे तव संयुगे। युद्धमस्य त्वया सह॥

Drona has been all along trying to capture you in battle. I do not think it proper for you to fight with him.

Drona Parva 162.48

योऽस्य सृष्टो विनाशाय च एवैनं हनिष्यति। परिवर्त्य गुरुं याहि यत्र राजा सुयोधनः॥

नानुरूपमहं मन्ये

He, that has been created created for his destruction, will slay him. Leaving your preceptor go (to the spot) were king Suyodhana is (fighting).

Drona Parva 162.50

राजा राज्ञा हि योद्धव्यो नाराज्ञा युद्धमिष्यते। तत्र त्वं गच्छ कौन्तेय हस्त्यश्वरथसंवृतः॥

Kings ought to fight with kings (only); and they should not desire to fight with those that are not kings. O son of Kunti, surrounded by elephants, horses and cars, go to that spot.

Drona Parva 162.51

यावन्तात्रेण च मया सहायेन धनंजयः। भीमश्च स्थशार्दूलो युध्यते कौरवैः सह॥

Where Dhananjaya and that most valiant of men, Bhima, with myself only to help them are fighting with (all) the Kauravas.

Drona Parva 162.52

वासुदेववचः श्रुत्वा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। मुहूर्तं चिन्तयित्वा तु ततो दारुणमाहवम्॥ प्रायाद् द्रुतममित्रनो यत्र भीमो व्यवस्थितः। विनिप्रंस्तावकान् योधान् व्यादितास्य इवान्तकः॥५३

Hearing these words of Vasudeva, the virtuous king Yudhishthira reflected for a moment and then proceeded towards the spot where the battle was raging hot and furious and where, Bhima, the slayer of his foes, taking up his station, was destroying your warriors like the (grim) Destroyer with gaping mouth.

Drona Parva 162.53

स्थघोषेण महता नादयन् वसुधातलम्। पर्जन्य इव धर्मान्ते नादयन् वै दिशो दश॥

Ringing the surface of the earth with the thundering rattle of his car like the roar of the clouds at the end of summer, that king of kings, Yudhishthira.

Drona Parva 162.54

भीमस्य निघ्नतः शत्रून् पाणिं जग्राह पाण्डवः। द्रोणोऽपि पाण्डुपञ्चालान् व्यधमद् रजनीमुखे॥

The son of Pandu, took up his station at the flank of Bhima who was destroying the foes. Drona also began, at that nigiit, to destroy his enemies, the Panchalas.
