संजय उवाच वर्तमाने तदा युद्धे घोररूपे भयानके। अभज्यत बलं तत्र तव पुत्रस्य पाण्डवैः॥

Sanjaya said During the progress of that terrible and awful battle, the army of your son were routed by the Pandavas.

Shalya Parva 23.1

तास्तुं यत्नेन महता संनिवार्य महारथान्। पुत्रस्ते योधयामास पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम्॥

Rallying their great car-warriors however, with vigorous exertions, your sons continued to fight with the Pandava army.

Shalya Parva 23.2

निवृत्ताः सहसा योधास्तव पुत्रजयैषिणः। सन्निवृत्तेषु तेष्वेवं युद्धमासीत् सुदारुणम्॥ तावकानां परेषां च देवासुररणोपमम्। परेषां तव सैन्ये वा नासीत् कश्चित् पराङ्मुखः॥

The Kuru warriors, seeking your son's welfare, suddenly came back. Upon their return, the battle once more became fearful, between your warriors and those of the foe, resembling that between the gods and the Asuras in the days of yore. Neither amongst the enemies nor amongst your people was there a single warrior who fled away from the field.

Shalya Parva 23.3

अनुमानेन युध्यन्ते संज्ञाभिश्च परस्परम्। तेषां क्षयो महानासीद् युध्यतामितरेतरम्॥

The warriors fought, knowing one another by the names they uttered. A great onslaught took place there.

Shalya Parva 23.4

ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा क्रोधेन महता युतः। जिगीषमाणः संग्रामे धार्तराष्ट्रान् सराजकान्॥ त्रिभिः शारद्वतं विद्ध्वा रुक्मपुङ्खः शिलाशितैः। चतुर्भिनिजघानाश्वान् नाराचैः कृतवर्मणः॥

Filled with great anger and desirous of defeating the Dhartarashtras and their king in that battle, king Yudhishthira struck the son of Sharadvata with three gold winged arrows whetted on stone and next killed with four others the four horses of Kritavarman.

Shalya Parva 23.5

अश्वत्थामा तु हार्दिक्यमपोवाह यशस्विनम्। अत शारद्वतोऽष्टाभिः प्रत्यविद्ध्यद् युधिष्ठिरम्॥

Then Ashvatthaman carried away the celebrated son of Hridika. Sharadvat's son struck Yudhishthira in return with eight arrows.

Shalya Parva 23.6

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा रथान् सप्तशतान् रणे। प्रेषयद् यत्र राजासौ धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः॥

Then king Duryodhana sent seven hundred cars to the place where king Yudhishthira was fighting.

Shalya Parva 23.7

ते रथा रथिभिर्युक्ता मनोमारुतरंहसः। अभ्यद्रवन्त संग्रामे कौन्तेयस्य रथं प्रति॥

Those cars, driven by excellent warriors and quick-coursing like the wind or thought, rushed in that battle against the car of Kunti's son.

Shalya Parva 23.8

ते समन्तान्महाराज परिवार्य युधिष्ठिरम्। अदृश्य सायकैश्चक्रुर्मेघा इव दिवाकरम्॥

Encircling Yudhishthira on all sides they made him invisible with their arrows like clouds hiding the sun from the view.

Shalya Parva 23.9

दृष्ट्वा धर्मराजानं कौरवेयैस्तथा कृतम्। नामृष्यन्त सुसंरब्धाः शिखण्डिप्रमुखा रथाः॥

Then Pandava heroes, led by Shikhandin, beholding king Yudhishthira assailed in that way by the Kauravas, were filled with rage and unable to put up with it.

Shalya Parva 23.10

रथैरश्ववरैर्युक्तैः किङ्किणीजालसंवृतः। आजग्मुरथ रक्षन्तः कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम्॥

Desirous of rescuing Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, they came there on their cars possessed of great speed and adorned with rows of bells.

Shalya Parva 23.11

ततः प्रववृते रौद्रः संग्रामः शोणितोदकः। पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च यमराष्ट्रविवर्धनः॥ ते दृष्ट्वा

Then took place an awful battle, in which blood flowed as water, between the Pandavas and the Kurus, that increased the denizens of Yama's region.

Shalya Parva 23.12

रथान् सप्तशतान् हत्वा कुरूणामाततायिनाम्। याण्डवाः सह पञ्चालैः पुनरेवाभ्यवारयन्॥

Killing those seven hundred hostile carwarriors of the Kuru army, the Pandavas and the Panchalas once more resisted (the whole Kuru ariny).

Shalya Parva 23.13

तत्र युद्धं महचासीत् तव पुत्रस्य पाण्डवैः। न च तत् तादृशं दृष्टं नैव चापि परिश्रुतम्॥

There took place a fierce encounter between your son and the Pandavas. We had never before seen or heard of its like.

Shalya Parva 23.14

वर्तमाने तदा युद्धे निर्मर्यादे समन्ततः। वध्यमानेषु योधेषु तावकेष्वितरेषु च॥ विनदत्सु च योधेषु शङ्खवर्यैश्च पूरितैः। उत्क्रुष्टैः सिंहनादैश्च गर्जितैश्चैव धन्विनाम्॥

During the onset of that battle in which no consideration was shown by any party for another and while the warriors of your army and those of the foe were being killed quickly, the coinbatants were all shouting and blowing their conchs. The bowmen were roaring and uttering loud noises of diverse kinds.

Shalya Parva 23.15

अतिप्रवृत्ते युद्धे च छिद्यमानेषु मर्मसु। धावमानेषु योधेषु जयगृद्धिषु मारिष॥

The very vitals of the combatants were being struck, during that fight and the troops, O sire, desirous of victory, were rushing with speed.

Shalya Parva 23.16

संहारे सर्वतो जाते पृथिव्यां शोकसम्भवे। बह्वीनामुत्तमस्त्रीणां सीमन्तोद्धरणे तथा॥

Everything on carth was under-going ai woeful destruction, during that battle when numberless ladies of birth and beauty were being made widows.

Shalya Parva 23.17

निर्मर्यादे महायुद्धे वर्तमाने सुदारुणे। प्रादुरासन् विनाशाय तदोत्पाताः सुदारुणाः॥

During the progress of that fierce encounter in which the warriors fought without any consideration for friends and foes, evil omens appeared, presaging the destruction of everything.

Shalya Parva 23.18

चचाल शब्दं कुर्वाणा सपर्वतवना मही। सदण्डा: सोल्मका राजन् कीर्यमाणाः समन्ततः॥ उल्का पेतुर्दिवो भूमावाहत्य रविमण्डलम्।

The earth, with her mountains and forests, shook making a loud noise. Meteors, like burning brands equipt with handles, dropped from the sky, O king, on every side of the earth as if from the solar disc.

Shalya Parva 23.19

विष्वग्वाताः प्रादुरासन् नीचैः शर्करवर्षिणः॥ अश्रूणि मुमुचुर्नागा वेपथु चास्पृशन् भृशम्।

There blew a hurricane on all sides, carrying away hard pebbles along its lower course. The elephants shed profuse tears and trembled greatly.

Shalya Parva 23.20

एतान् घोराननादृत्य समुत्पातान् सुदारुणान्॥ पुनर्युद्धाय संयत्ताः क्षत्रियास्तस्थुरव्यथाः। रमणीये कुरुक्षेत्रे पुण्ये स्वर्ग यियासवः॥

Disregarding all those fierce and awful omens, the Kshatriyas, consulting with one another, cheerfully stood on the field of Kurukshetra, desirous of going to heaven.

Shalya Parva 23.21

ततो गान्धारराजस्य पुत्रः शकुनिरब्रवीत्। युद्ध्यध्वमग्रतो यावत् पृष्ठतो हन्मि पाण्डवान्॥ ततो नः सम्प्रयातानां मद्रयोधास्तरस्विनः। हृष्टाः किलकिलाशब्दमकुर्वन्ता परे तथा॥

Then Shakuni, the son of the Gandhara king, said-"Fight you all in front! I, however, will kill the Pandavas from behind!”_-Then the active Madraka warriors, amongst those on our side that were advancing, were filled with joy and uttered various cries. Others also did the same.

Shalya Parva 23.22

अस्मांस्तु पुनरासाद्य लब्धलक्षा दुरासदाः। शरासनानि धुन्वन्तः शरवर्षैरवाकिरन्॥

The invincible and sure-armed Pandavas, once more coming against us, shook their bows and enshrouded us with showers of arrows.

Shalya Parva 23.23

ततो हतं परैस्तत्र मद्रराजबलं तदा। दुर्योधनबलं दृष्ट्वा पुनरासीत् पराङ्मुखम्॥

The army of the Madrakas then were killed by the foc. Beholding this, the troops of Duryodhana once more fled from the battle.

Shalya Parva 23.24

गान्धारराजस्तु पुनर्वाक्यमाह ततो बली। निवर्तध्वमधर्मज्ञा युध्यध्वं किं सृतेन वः॥ अनीकं दशसाहस्रमश्वानां भरतर्षभ। आसीद् गान्धारराजस्य विशालप्रासयोधिनाम्॥

The might king of the Gandharas, however, once more said these words-"Stop, you sinful wretches, fight with the foe. What use is there of fight.” At that time, O foremost of Bharata's race, the king of the Gandharas had full ten thousand horsemen capable of fighting with bright lances.

Shalya Parva 23.25

बलेन तेन विक्रम्य वर्तमाने जनक्षये। पृष्ठतः पाण्डवानीकमभ्यघ्ननिशितैः शरैः॥

During the onset of that great carnage, Shakuni, aided by the force, displayed his valor and assailed the Pandava army at the rear, killing it with his keen arrows.

Shalya Parva 23.26

तदभ्रमिव वातेन क्षिप्यमाणं समन्ततः। अभज्यत महाराज पाण्डूनां सुमहद् बलम्॥

The huge force of the Pandus then, O king, were dispersed even as a mass of clouds of all sides by a powerful wind.

Shalya Parva 23.27

ततो युधिष्ठिर: प्रेक्ष्य भग्नं स्वबलमन्तिकात्। अभ्यनादयदव्यग्रः सहदेवं महाबलम्॥ असौ सुबलपुत्रो नो जघनं पीड्य दंशितः। सैन्यानि सूदयत्येष पश्य पाण्डव दुर्मतिम्॥

Then beholding his own army rouled, Yudhishthira coolly urged the mighty Sahadeva, saying-"Yonder the son of Subala, afflicting our rear, stands clad in mail. He kills our forces. Behold that wicked man, O son of Pandu.

Shalya Parva 23.28

गच्छ त्वं द्रौपदेयैश्च शकुनि सौबलं जहि। रथनीकमहं धक्ष्ये पञ्चालसहितोऽनघ॥

Helped by the sons of Draupadi proceed towards him and kill Shakuni, the son of Subala. Supported by the Panchalas, O sinless one, I will meanwhile kill the car-force of the enemy.

Shalya Parva 23.29

गच्छन्तु कुञ्जरा: सर्वे वाजिनश्च सह त्वया। पादाताश्च त्रिसाहस्राः शकुनि तैर्वृतो जहि॥ ततो गजाः सप्तशताश्चापपाणिभिरास्थिताः। पञ्च चाश्वसहस्राणि सहदेवश्च वीर्यवान्॥ पादाताश्च त्रिसाहस्रा द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः। रणे ह्यभ्येद्रवंस्ते तु शकुनि युद्धदुर्मदम्॥

Let all the elephants and all the horse and three thousand foot go with you. Helped by these, slay Shakuni.” At this seven hundred elephants ridden by bowmen and five thousand horse and the valiant Sahadeva and three thousand foot-soldiers and the son of Draupadi, all proceeded against invincible Shakuni.

Shalya Parva 23.30

ततस्तु सौबलो राजन्नभ्यतिक्रम्य पाण्डवान्। जघान पृष्ठतः सेनां जयगृद्धः प्रतापवान्॥

However, O king, overpowering the Pandavas and longing for victory, Subala's son, of great valour, began to slay their forces from the back.

Shalya Parva 23.31

अश्वरोहास्तु संरब्धाः पाण्डवानां तरस्विनाम्। प्राविशन् सौबलानीकमभ्यतिक्रम्य तान् रथान्॥

The horsemen, beside themselves with rage, of the Pandavas penetrated the division of Subala's son, overpowering the latter's carwarriors.

Shalya Parva 23.32

ते तत्र सादिनाः शूराः सौबलस्य महद् बलम्। रणमध्ये व्यतिष्ठन्त शरवर्षैरवाकिरन्॥

Those heroic horsemen, staying in the midst of their own elephants, enshrouded the large host of Subala's son with showers of arrows.

Shalya Parva 23.33

तदुद्यतगदाप्रासमाकपुरुषसेवितम्। प्रावर्तत महद् युद्धं राजन् दुर्मन्त्रिते तव॥

On account of your evil counsels, O king, a dreadful battle took place in which maces and lances were used and in which heroes only took part.

Shalya Parva 23.34

उपारमन्त ज्याशब्दाः प्रेक्षका रथिनोऽभवन्। न हि स्वेषां परेषां वा विशेषः प्रत्यदृश्यत॥

The twang of bows was no longer heard there, for all the car-warriors stood there as spectators. At that time no difference could be seen between the opposing parties.

Shalya Parva 23.35

शूरबाहुविसृष्टानां शक्तीनां भरतर्षभ। ज्योतिषामिव सम्पातमपश्यन् कुरुपाण्डवाः॥

Both the Kurus and the Pandavas, O foremost of Bharatas, saw the darts, shot off heroic arms, pass like meteors through the sky.

Shalya Parva 23.36

ऋष्टिभिर्विमलाभिश्च तत्र तत्र विशाम्पते। सम्पतन्तीभिराकाशमावृतं बह्वशोभत॥

The entire sky, O king, covered with falling and bright sword, appeared highly beautiful.

Shalya Parva 23.37

प्रासानां पततां राजन् रूपमासीत् समन्ततः। शलभानामिवाकाशे तदा भरतसत्तम॥

The view presented, O best of the Bharatas, by the lances hurled all around, was like that of swarms of locusts in the sky.

Shalya Parva 23.38

रुधिरोक्षितसर्वाङ्गा विप्रविद्धैर्नियन्तृभिः। हयाः परिपतन्ति स्म शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः॥

Horses, with limbs covered with blood on account of wounds inflicted by horsemen themselves struck with arrows, dropped down on all sides in hundreds and thousands.

Shalya Parva 23.39

अन्योयं परिपिष्टाश्च समासाद्य परस्परम्। आविक्षताः स्म दृश्यन्ते वमन्तो रुधिरं मुखैः॥

They all remained huddled together. many of them were wounded and many vomited blood. A thick darkness set in there when the troops were covered with a cloud of dust.

Shalya Parva 23.40

ततोऽभवत्तमो घोरं सैन्येन रजसा वृते। तानपाक्रमतोऽद्राक्षं तस्माद् देशादरिंदम॥

When that darkness covered everything, O king, we saw those brave heroes, horses and men move away from that spot.

Shalya Parva 23.41

अश्वान् राजन् मनुष्यांश्च रजसा संवृते सति। भूमौ निपतिताश्चान्ये वमन्तो रुधिरं बहु॥

Others dropped down on the earth vomiting blood profusely. Many warriors, entangled with one another by their locks, could not move.

Shalya Parva 23.42

केशाकेशि समालग्ना न शेकुश्चेष्टितुं नराः। अन्योन्यमश्वपृष्ठेभ्यो विकर्षन्तो महाबलाः॥ मल्ला इव समासाद्य निजघ्नुरितरेतरम्।

Many powerful heroes dragged one another from the backs of their horses and encountering one another thus, killed one another like wrestlers. Many, deprived of life, were carried away by the horses they rode.

Shalya Parva 23.43

अश्वैश्च व्यपकृष्यन्त बहवोऽत्र गतासवः॥ रक्तोक्षितैश्छिन्नभूजैरवकृष्टशिरोरुहैः।

Many men, elated with the pride of courage and inspired with the desire of victory, dropped down on the earth.

Shalya Parva 23.44

व्यदृश्यत मही कीर्णा शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः॥ दूरं न शक्यं तत्रासीद् गन्तुमश्वेन केनचित्।

The earth was covered with hundreds and thousands of blessing warriors, deprived of limbs and divested of hairs.

Shalya Parva 23.45

साश्वारोहैर्हतैरश्वैरावृते वसुधातले॥ रुधिरोक्षितसन्नाहैरात्तशस्त्रैरुदायुधैः। नानाप्रहरणै?रैः परस्परवधैषिभिः॥

The surface of the earth being covered with clephant-riders and horsemen and killed horses and warriors with blood-stained armours and those armed with weapons and those who had tried to kill one another with various kinds of terrible weapons, all lying in a mass in that lifedestroying battle, no warrior could proceed far on his horse.

Shalya Parva 23.46

सुसंनिकृष्टैः संग्रामे हतभूयिष्ठसैनिकैः। स मुहूर्तं ततो युद्ध्वा सौबलोऽथ विशाम्पते॥ षट्साहस्रर्हयैः शिष्टैरपायाच्छकुनिस्ततः। तथैव पाण्डवानीकं रुधिरेण समुक्षितम्॥ षट्साहौर्हयैः शिष्टैरपायाच्छान्तवाहनम्।

Having fought for a little while, Shakuni, the son of Subala, O king, went away from that spot with the remnant of his cavalry, six thousand in number. Similarly the Pandava force, covered with blood and its animals worn out, moved away from there with its remnant consisting of six thousand horse.

Shalya Parva 23.47

अश्वारोहाच पाण्डूनामब्रुवन् रुधिरोक्षिताः॥ भूमौ निपतिताश्चान्ये बहवो विजयैषिणः। तत्र तत्र व्यदृश्यन्त पुरुषाः शूरमानिनः॥ सुसंनिकृष्टे संग्रामे भूयिष्ठे त्यक्तजीविताः। न हि शक्यं स्थैर्योधं कुत एव महागजैः॥ रथानेव रथा यान्तु कुञ्जराः कुञ्जरानपि।

Horsemen, covered with blood of the Pandava army then, determined upon fighting and prepared to sacrifice their lives, said-"It is no longer possible to fight here on cars; how much more difficult it is then to fight here on elephants against elephants.

Shalya Parva 23.48

प्रतियातो हि शकुनिः स्वमनीकमवस्थितः॥ न पुनः सौबलो राजा युद्धमभ्यागमिष्यति।

Having retreated Shakuni is now staying within his own detachment. The royal son of Subala will not again come to fight.”

Shalya Parva 23.49

ततस्तु द्रौपदेयाश्च ते च मत्ता महाद्विपाः॥ प्रययुर्यत्र पाञ्चाल्यो धृष्टद्युम्नो महारथः।

Then the sons of Draupadi and those infuriate elephants went where the Panchala prince Dhrishtadyumna, that great car-warrior, was.

Shalya Parva 23.50

सहदेवोऽपि कौरव्य रजोमेघे समुत्थिते॥ एकाकी प्रययौ तत्र यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः।

Sahadeva also, when that cloud of dust set in, went alone where king Yudhishthira was.

Shalya Parva 23.51

ततस्तेषु प्रयातेषु शकुनिः सौबलः पुनः॥ पार्श्वतोऽभ्यहनत् क्रुद्धो धृष्टद्युम्नस्य वाहिनीम्।

After all those had departed Shakuni the son of Subala, worked up with wrath, once more attacked. Dhrishtadyumna's division and began to strike it.

Shalya Parva 23.52

तत् पुनस्तुमुलं युद्धं प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वाभ्यवर्तत॥ तावकानां परेषां च परस्परवधैषिणाम्।

Again a dreadful encounter took place, in which the combatants did not care for their lives, between your soldiers and those of the foe, all of whom were desirous of killing one another.

Shalya Parva 23.53

ते चान्योन्यमवैक्षन्त तस्मिन् वीरसमागमे॥ योधा:पर्यपतन् राजन् शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः।

In that encounter of heroes, the combatants first looked at one another steadfastly and then rushed, O king and attacked one another in hundreds and thousands.

Shalya Parva 23.54

असिभिश्छिद्यमानानां शिरसां लोकसंक्षये॥ प्रादुरासीन्महाशब्दस्तालानां पततामिव।

In that onslaught, heads, cut off with swords, dropped down with a noise like that of falling palmyra fruits.

Shalya Parva 23.55

विमुक्तानां शरीराणां छिन्नानां पततां भुवि॥ सायुधानां च बाहूनामुरूणां च विशाम्पते। आसीत् कटकटाशब्दः सुमहाँल्लोमहर्षणः॥

Loud noise also arose making the very hairs stand erect, of bodies falling down on the ground, divested of armours and wounded with weapons and of falling weapons also, O king and of arms and thighs cut off from the trunk.

Shalya Parva 23.56

निघ्नन्तो निशितैःशस्त्रैर्धातॄन् पुत्रान् सखीनपि। योधाः परिपतन्ति स्म यथामिषकृते खगाः॥

Assailing brothers and sons and even fathers with keen weapons, the combatants fought like birds, for a piece of meat.

Shalya Parva 23.57

अन्योन्यं प्रतिसंरब्धा समासाद्य परस्परम्। अहं पूर्वमहं पूर्वमिति न्यघ्नन् सहस्रशः॥

Worked up with rage, thousand of warriors attacked one another in that battle.

Shalya Parva 23.58

संघातेनासनभ्रष्टैरश्वारोहैर्गतासुभिः। हयाः परिपतन्ति स्म शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः॥

Hundreds and thousands of combatants, pressed down by slain horsemen while falling down from their horses, fell down on the field.

Shalya Parva 23.59

स्फुरतां प्रतिविष्टानामश्वानां शीघ्रगामिनाम्। स्तनतां च मनुष्याणां सन्नद्धानां विशाम्पते॥ शक्त्वृष्टिप्रासशब्दश्च तुमुल: समपद्यत। भिन्दतां परमर्माणि राजन् दुर्मत्रिते तव॥

There arose loud noise of neighing horses of great flectness and of shouting men clad in mail and of the falling darts and swords, O king, of combatants desirous of cutting one another to the very quick on account, O monarch, of your evil policy.

Shalya Parva 23.60

श्रमाभिभूताः सरंब्धाः श्रान्तवाहाः पिपासवः। विक्षताश्च शितैः शस्त्रैरभ्यवर्तन्त तावकाः॥

At that time, your soldiers, exhausted and worked up with rage, their animals fatigued, themselves thirsty, wounded with sharp weapons, began to turn away from the battle.

Shalya Parva 23.61

मत्ता रुधिरगन्धेन बहवोऽत्र विचेतसः। जघ्नुः परान् स्वसांश्चैव प्राप्तान प्राप्ताननन्तरान्॥

Maddened with the smell of blood, many became so insensible that they killed friends and foes alike, in fact, every one they could lay hold on.

Shalya Parva 23.62

बहवश्च गतप्राणाः क्षत्रिया जयगृद्धिनः। भूमावभ्यपतन् राजन् शरवृष्टिभिरावृताः॥

O king, actuated with the desire of victory, large numbers of Kshatriyas were struck down with arrows and lay prostrate on the earth.

Shalya Parva 23.63

वृकगृध्रशृगालानां तुमुले मोदनेऽहनि। आसीद् बलक्षयो घोरस्तव पुत्रस्य पश्यतः॥

Wolves, vultures and jackals began to yell hideously in joy. In the very presence of your son your son army suffered a great loss.

Shalya Parva 23.64

नराश्वकायैः संछन्ना भूमिरासीद् विशाम्पते। रुधिरोदकचित्रा च भीरूणां भयवर्धिनी॥

The earth, O king, was covered with the bodies of men and horses and over-flown with rivers of blood that struck terror to the timid,

Shalya Parva 23.65

असिभिः पट्टिशैः शूलैस्तक्षमाणाः पुनः पुनः। तावकाः पाण्डवेयाश्च न न्यवर्तन्त भारत॥

Struck and wounded repeatedly with swords and battle-axes and lances, your warriors, as also the Pandavas, O Bharata, ceased to approach one another.

Shalya Parva 23.66

प्रहरन्तो यथाशक्ति यावत् प्राणस्य धारणम्। योधाः परिपतन्ति स्म वमन्तो रुधिरं व्रणैः॥

Striking one another according to their might and fighting to the last combatants dropped down, bleeding.

Shalya Parva 23.67

शिरो गृहीत्वा केशेषु कबन्धः स्म प्रदृश्यते। उद्यम्य च शितं खड्ग रुधिरेण परिप्लुतम्॥

Headless from were seen, catching the hair of their heads and holding swords stained in blood.

Shalya Parva 23.68

तथोत्थितेषु बहुषु कबधेषु नराधिप। तथा रुधिरगन्धेन योधाः कश्मलमाविशन्॥ मन्दीभूते ततः शब्दे पाण्डवानां महद् बलम्। अल्पावशिष्टैस्तुरगैरभ्यवर्तत सौबलः॥

When many headless forms, O king, had thus rise up, when the smell of blood had made the warriors almost senseless and the loud noise had somewhat subsided, Subala's son again approached the large army of the Pandavas, with the small remnant of his cavalry.

Shalya Parva 23.69

ततोऽभ्यधावंस्त्वरिताः पाण्डवा जयगृद्धिनः। पदातयश्च नागाश्च सादिनश्चोधतायुधाः॥

Thereat actuated with the desire of victory and endued with great activity, Pandavas rushed towards Shakuni, with foot-soldiers and elephants and cavalry all with uplifted weapons.

कोष्ठकीकृत्य चाप्येनं परिक्षिप्य च सर्वशः। शस्त्रैर्नानाविधैर्जघ्नुर्युद्धपारं तितीर्षवः॥

रथेभ्यो रथिन: पेतुर्द्विपेभ्यो हस्तिसादिनः। विमानेभ्यो सिद्धाः पुण्यक्षयादिव॥

Car-warriors dropped down from cars and elephant-men from elephants, like virtuous persons falling down from their celestial vehicles upon the wane of their virtue.

एवमन्योन्यमायत्ता योधा जघ्नुर्महाहवे। पितृन भ्रातृन् वयस्यांश्च पुत्रानापि तथा परे॥
