संजय उवाच दुर्योधनो महाराज सुदर्शश्चापि ते सुतः। हतशेषौ तदा संख्ये वाजिमध्ये व्यवस्थितौ॥

Sanjaya said Duryodhana, O king and your Sudarsha, the only two of your children who were not killed, were at that time in the midst of the Kauravas cavalry.

Shalya Parva 27.1

ततो दुर्योधनं दृष्ट्वा वाजिमध्ये व्यवस्थितम्। उवाच देवकीपुत्रः कुन्तीपुत्रं धनंजयम्॥ शत्रवो हतभूयिष्ठा ज्ञातयः परिपालिताः। गृहीत्वा संजयं चासौ निवृत्तः शिनिपुङ्गवः॥

Seeing Duryodhana in the midst of the cavalry, Krishna said to Dhananjaya, the son of Kunti:-"A large number of our enemies, relations that had received our protection, have been killed. There that best of Shini's race is returning, having taken Sanjaya captive.

Shalya Parva 27.2

परिश्रान्तश्च नकुलः सहदेवश्च भारत। योधयित्वा रणे पापान् धार्तराष्ट्रान् सहानुगान्॥

Both Nakula and Sahadeva, O Bharata, are worn out having fought with the wretched। Dhartarashtras and their followers.

Shalya Parva 27.3

दुर्योधनमभित्यज्य त्रय एते व्यवस्थिताः। कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च द्रौणिश्चैव महारथः॥

Those there, viz., Kripa and Kritavarman and the great car-warrior Ashvatthaman, have left Duryodhana's side and taken up their positions elsewhere.

Shalya Parva 27.4

असौ तिष्ठति पाञ्चाल्यः श्रिया परमया युतः। दुर्योधनबलं हत्वा सह सर्वैः प्रभद्रकैः॥

Having killed Duryodhana's soldiers, the beautiful Panchala prince is waiting there in the midst of the Prabhadrakas.

Shalya Parva 27.5

असौ दुर्योधनः पार्थ वाजिमध्ये व्यवस्थितः। छत्रेण ध्रियमाणेन प्रेक्षमाणो मुहुर्मुहुः॥

There, O Partha, Duryodhana is in the midst of his cavalry, with the umbrella held over his head and looking all around.

Shalya Parva 27.6

प्रतिव्यूह्य बलं सर्वं रणमध्ये व्यवस्थितः। एनं हत्वा शितैर्बाणैः कृतकृत्यो भविष्यसि॥

Having re-arranged the remnant of his army, he waits in the midst of his forces. Killing this one with your keen arrows you may achieve all your objects.

Shalya Parva 27.7

गजानीकं हतं दृष्ट्वा त्वां च प्राप्तमरिंदम। यावन्न विद्रवन्त्यते तावञ्जहि सुयोधनम्॥

As long as these troops do not fly away seeing you in their midst and witnessing also the destruction of their elephant force, do you, O chastiser of foes, try to kill Duryodhana.

Shalya Parva 27.8

यातु कश्चित्तु पाञ्चाल्यं क्षिप्रमागम्यतामिति। परिश्रान्तबलस्तात नैष मुच्येत किल्विषी॥

Let somebody go to the Panchala prince and ask him to come here. The Kaurava troops are all exhausted. O sire, the sinful Duryodhana will never succeed in escaping.

Shalya Parva 27.9

हत्वा तव बलं सर्वं संग्रामे धृतराष्ट्रजः। जितान् पाण्डुसुतान् मत्वा रूपं धारयते महत्॥

Having killed a large number your soldiers in battle the son of Dhritarashtra looks highly delighted as if he believes that the Pandavas have been defeated.

Shalya Parva 27.10

निहतं स्वबलं दृष्ट्वा पीडितं चापि पाण्डवैः। ध्रुवमेष्यति संग्रामे वधायैवात्मनो नृपः॥ एवमुक्तः फल्गुनस्तु कृष्णं वचनमब्रवीत। धृतराष्ट्रसुताः सर्वे हता भीमेन माधव॥ यावेतावास्थितौ कृष्ण तावद्य न भविष्यतः।

Seeing his own soldiers assailed and killed by the Pandavas, the Kuru king will certainly come to battle for his own destruction.”—Thus addressed by Krishna, Phalguna said to him:"almost all the sons of Dhritarashtra, O giver of honours, have been killed by. Bhirna. Only these two still survive; they however, O Krishna, shall also be killed today.

Shalya Parva 27.11

हतो भीष्मो हतो द्रोणः कर्णो वैकर्तनो हतः॥ मद्रराजो हत: शल्यो हतः कृष्ण जयद्रथः।

Bhishma has been killed, Drona has been killed, Karna has been killed, Shalya, the king of the Madras, has been killed and Jayadratha also, O Krishna, has been killed.

Shalya Parva 27.12

हयाः पञ्चशताः शिष्टाः शकुनेः सौबलस्य च॥ रथानां तु जनार्दन। दन्तिनां च शतं साग्रं त्रिसाहस्राः पदातयः॥

Only five hundred cavalry constitute the army of Shakuni the son of Subala. Only two hundred still remain, of cars, O Janarddana. Of elephants the only remnant is a hundred and of foot only three thousand.

Shalya Parva 27.13

अश्वत्थामा कृपश्चैव त्रिगर्ताधिपतिस्तथा। उलूकः शकुनिश्चैव कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः॥

There remain also Ashvatthaman and Kripa and the king of the Trigartas and Uluka and Shakuni and Kritavarman of the Satwata race.

Shalya Parva 27.14

एतद् बलमभूच्छेष धार्तराष्ट्रस्य माधव। मोक्षो न नूनं कालात् तु विद्युते भुवि कस्यचित्।

These, O Madhava, are the remnant of Duryodhana's army. Truly no body will escape from death.

Shalya Parva 27.15

शते शिष्टे द्वे एव तु अद्याह्ना हि महाराजो हतामित्रो भविष्यति॥ न हि मे मोक्ष्यते कश्चित् परेषामिह चिन्तये।

Although such a great slaughter has taken place. Duryodhana is still alive. Today king Yudhishthira, however, will be shorn of all his foes. None of my enemies will escape me, today.

Shalya Parva 27.16

त्वद्य समरं कृष्ण न हास्यन्ति मदोत्कटाः॥ तान् वै सर्वान् हनिष्यामि यद्यपि स्युर्न मानुषाः।

Even if they be superhuman beings, O Krishna! I shall yet kill all those warriors today if only they do not fly away from the battlefield.

Shalya Parva 27.17

अद्य युद्धे सुसंक्रुद्धो दीर्घं राज्ञा प्रमागरम्॥ अपनेष्यामि गान्धारं घातयित्वा शितैः शरैः।

Worked up with wrath in today's battle, I shall, by killing the prince of Gandhara with my keen arrows, remove that sleeplessness which the king has suffered from for a long time.

Shalya Parva 27.18

निकृत्या वै दुराचारो यानि रत्नानि सौबलः॥ सभायामहरद् द्यूते पुनस्तान्याहराम्यहम्।

I shall regain all those valuable properties which Subala's wicked son won from us at the gambling match.

Shalya Parva 27.19

अद्य ता अपि रोत्स्यन्ति सर्वा नागपुरे स्त्रियः॥ श्रुत्वा पतींश्च पुत्रांश्च पाण्डवैर्निहतान् युधि।

Hearing of the destruction of their husbands and sons at the hands of the Pandavas in battle, all the ladies of Hastinapur will cry.

Shalya Parva 27.20

समाप्तमद्य वै कर्म सर्वं कृष्ण भविष्यति॥ अद्य दुर्योधनो दीप्ता श्रियं प्राणांश्च मोक्ष्यति

Today, O Krishna, our task will be finished. Today Duryodhana shall be divorced from his prosperity and life.

Shalya Parva 27.21

नापयाति भयात् कृष्णं संग्रामाद् यदि चेन्मम॥ निहतं विद्धि वार्ष्णेय धार्तराष्ट्रं सुबालिशम्।

take the foolish of Dhritarashtra as dead, O Vrishni hero, if, O Krishna, he does not today fly away from the battle,

Shalya Parva 27.22

मम ह्येतदशक्तं वै वाजिवृन्दमरिन्दम॥ सोढुं ज्यातलनिर्घोषं याहि यावनिहन्म्यहम्।

You may son Those horses cannot bear the twang of my bow and the slaps of my palms. Proceed there, OKrishna, for I will kill them.

Shalya Parva 27.23

एवमुक्तस्तु दाशार्हः पाण्डवेन यशस्विना॥ अचोदयद्धयान् राजन् दुर्योधनबलं प्रति।

Thus accosted by Pandu's son of great mental strength, the Dasarha heroe urged his horses, O king, towards Duryodhana's detachment.

Shalya Parva 27.24

तदनीकमभिप्रेक्ष्य त्रयः सज्जा महारथाः॥ भीमसेनोऽर्जुनश्चैव सहदेवश्च मारिष। प्रययुः सिंहनादेन दुर्योधनजिघांसया॥

Beholding that force, three great carwarriors prepared themselves for striking it, for Bhimasena and Arjuna and Sahadeva, O sire, in a body, proceeded against it with loud leonine roars in order to kill Duryodhana.

Shalya Parva 27.25

तान् प्रेक्ष्य सहितान् सर्वाञ्जवेनोद्यतकार्मुकान्। सौबलोऽभ्यद्रवद् युद्धे पाण्डवानाततायिनः॥

Beholding those three warriors rushing quickly together with uplifted bows, Subala's son proceeded against the Pandavas.

Shalya Parva 27.26

सुदर्शनस्तव सुतो भीमसेनं समभ्ययात्। सुशर्मा शकुनिश्चैव युयुधाते किरीटिना॥ सहदेवं तव सुतो हयपृष्ठगतोऽभ्ययात्।

Your son Sudarshana rushed against Bhimasena. Susharman and Shakuni met with Kiritin. Your son Duryodhana on horse back proceeded against Sahadeva.

Shalya Parva 27.27

ततो हि यत्नतः क्षिप्रं तव पुत्रो जनाधिप॥ प्रासेन सहदेवस्य शिरसि प्राहरद् भृशम्।

Then your son, O king, with great speed and care, forcibly struck Sahadeva's head with a lance.

Shalya Parva 27.28

सोपाविशद् रथोपस्थे तव पुत्रेण ताडितः॥ रुधिराप्लुतसर्वाङ्ग आशीविष इव श्वसन्।

Thus struck by your son, Sahadeva sat down on his car, all his limbs being covered with blood and himself breathing like a snake.

Shalya Parva 27.29

प्रतिलभ्य ततः संज्ञा सहदेवो विशाम्पते॥ दुर्योधनं शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः संक्रुद्धः समवाकिरत्।

Reigning his consciousness then, O king, Sahadeva, in anger, covered Duryodhana with keen shafts.

Shalya Parva 27.30

पार्थोऽपि युधि विक्रम्य कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः॥ शूराणामश्वपृष्ठेभ्यः शिरांसि निचकर्त ह।

Kunti's son Dhananjaya, otherwise called Partha, displaying his prowess, sundered the heads of many brave warriors on horse back.

Shalya Parva 27.31

तदनीकं तदा पार्थो व्यधमद् बहुभिः शरैः॥ पातयित्वा हयान् सर्वास्त्रिगर्तानां रथान् ययौ।

Indeed, Partha, with many arrows, destroyed that (cavalry). Having. killed all the horses, he then proceeded against the cars of the Trigartas.

Shalya Parva 27.32

ततस्ते सहिता भूत्वा त्रिगर्तानां महारथाः॥ अर्जुनं वासुदेवं च शरवर्षैरवाकिरन्।

Thereat the great car warriors of the Trigartas, in a body, covered Arjuna and Vasudeva with showers of arrows.

Shalya Parva 27.33

सत्यकर्माणमाक्षिप्य क्षुरप्रेण महायशाः॥ ततोऽस्य स्यन्दनस्येषां चिच्छिदे पाण्डुनन्दनः।

Assailing Satyakarman with a razor-headed arrow, the illustrious son of Pandu, sundered his antagonist's car-shafts.

Shalya Parva 27.34

शिलाशितेन च विभो क्षुरप्रेण महायशाः॥ शिरश्चिच्छेद सहसा तप्तकुण्डलभूषणम्।

With another razor-headed arrow, O lord whetted on stone, that illustrious hero, smiling cut off his antagonist's head crown adorned with a golden.

Shalya Parva 27.35

सत्येषुमध चादत्त योधानां मिषतां ततः॥ यथा सिंहो वने राजन् मृगं परिबुभुक्षितः।

He next attacked Satyeshu before all the warriors, like hungry lion, O king, in the forest, attacking a deer.

Shalya Parva 27.36

तं निहत्य ततः पार्थः सुशर्माण: त्रिभिः शरैः॥ विद्ध्वा तानहनत् सर्वान् रथान् रुक्मविभूषितान्।

Having killed him, Partha struck Susharman with three arrows and then killed all those carwarriors bedecked with golden ornaments.

Shalya Parva 27.37

ततः प्रायात् त्वरन् पार्थो दीर्घकालं सुसंवृतम्॥ मुञ्चन् क्रोधविषं तीक्ष्णं प्रस्थलाधिपतिं प्रति।

He then proceeded with great force against Susharman the king of Prasthala, displaying his anger cherished for many long years.

Shalya Parva 27.38

तमर्जुनः पृषत्कानां शतेन भरतर्षभ॥ पूरयित्वा ततो वाहान् प्राहरत् तस्य धन्विनः।

Covering him, first, O foremost of Bharata's race, with a hundred arrows Arjuna then killed all the horses of that bowman,

Shalya Parva 27.39

ततः शरं समादाय यमदण्डोपमं तदा॥ सुशर्माणं समुद्दिश्य चिक्षेपाशु हसन्निव।

Fixing then a strong arrow that resembled the rod of Yama, Partha, smiling, quickly shot it at Susharman, aiming it at him.

Shalya Parva 27.40

स शरः प्रेषितस्तेन क्रोधदीप्तेन धन्विना॥ सुशर्माण समासाद्य बिभेद हृदयं रणे।

Shot by that bowman chaffing with wrath, that arrow reaching Susharman, passed through his heart in that battle.

Shalya Parva 27.41

स गतासुमहाराज पपात धरणीतले॥ नन्दयन् पाण्डवान् सर्वान् व्यथयंश्चापि तावकान्।

O king, Susharman fell down dead on the earth, gladdening all the Pandavas and distressing all your warriors.

Shalya Parva 27.42

शुशर्माणं रणे हत्वा पुत्रानस्य महारथान्॥ सप्त चाष्टौ च त्रिंशच्च सायकैरनयत् क्षमम्।

Having killed Susharman in that battle, Partha then, with his arrow, killed the five and thirty sons of that king, all of whom were great car-warriors.

Shalya Parva 27.43

ततोऽस्य निशितैर्बाणैः सर्वान् हत्वा पदानुगान्॥ अभ्यगाद् भारती सेनां हतशेषां महारथः।

Killing next all the followers, of Susharman with his keen arrows, the great car-warrior Arjuna proceeded against the remnant of the Bharata army.

Shalya Parva 27.44

भीमस्तु समरे क्रुद्धः पुत्रं तव जनाधिप॥ सुदर्शनमदृश्यं तं शरैश्चक्रे हसन्निव।

In that battle, filled with rage, O king, Bhima covered Sudarshana with his arrows.

Shalya Parva 27.45

ततोऽस्य प्रहसन् क्रुद्धः शिरः कायादपाहरत्॥ क्षुरप्रेण सुतीक्ष्णेन स हतः प्रापतद् भुवि।

Filled with rage, the son of Pandu, smiling, cut off his antagonist's head with a sharp razorheaded arrow. The prince fell down dead on the earth.

Shalya Parva 27.46

तस्मिंस्तु निहते वीर ततस्तस्य पदानुगाः॥ परिववू रणे भीमं किरन्तो विविधाशरान्।

Upon the fall of that (Kuru) hero, his followers encircled Bhima in that battle, making a downpour of whetted arrows.

Shalya Parva 27.47

ततस्तु निशितैर्बाणैस्तवानीकं वृकोदरः॥ इन्द्राशनिसमस्पर्शः : समन्तात् पर्यवाकिरत्। ततः क्षणेन तद् भीमो न्यहनद् भरतर्षभ॥

With keen arrows Vrikodara, however, whose touch resembled that of Indra's thunder, enshrouded the army around him. Within a very short time, Bhima killed them all, O foremost of Bharata's race.

Shalya Parva 27.48

तेषु तूत्साद्यमानेषु सेनाध्यक्षा महारथाः। भीमसेनं समासाद्य ततोऽयुद्ध्यन्त भारत॥

Whilst they were being thus slain, many powerful Kaurava warriors, O Bharata, approached Bhima and began to fight with him.

Shalya Parva 27.49

स तान् सर्वाशरैघोरैरवाकिरत पाण्डवः। तथैव तावका राजन् पाण्डवेयान् महारथान्॥

The son of Pandu, O king, enshrouded all of them with his arrows. In the same way your warriors, O king, covered the great carwarriors of the Pandavas with arrows from all sides.

Shalya Parva 27.50

शरवर्षेण महता समन्तात् पर्यवारयन्। व्याकुलं तदभूत् सर्वं पाण्डवानां परैः सह॥

All the warriors then, of both sides thus fighting with one another, became exceedingly agitated.

Shalya Parva 27.51

तावकानां च समरे पाण्डवेयैर्युयुत्सताम्। तत्र योधास्तदा पेतुः परस्परसमाहताः। उभयोः सेनयो राजन् संशोचन्तः स्म बान्धवान्॥

Struck by one another, the warriors of both armies, O king, began to drop down, lamenting for their (deceased) relatives.
