संजय उवाच ततः क्रुद्धा महाराज सौवलस्य पदानुगाः। त्यक्त्वा जीवितमाक्रन्दे पाण्डवान् पर्यवारयन्॥

Sanjaya said After this, the followers of Subala's son, O king, were worked up with rage. Prepared to sacrifice their lives in that dreadful encounter, they began to oppose the Pandavas.

Shalya Parva 29.1

तानर्जुनः प्रत्यगृह्णात् सहदेवजये धृतः। भीमसेनश्च तेजस्वी क्रुद्धाशीविषदर्शनः॥

Resolved to help Sahadeva in his victory, the energetic Arjuna and Bhimasena, resembling an infuriated venomous serpent, received those warriors.

Shalya Parva 29.2

शक्त्यृष्टिप्रासहस्तानां सहदेवं जिघांसताम्। संकल्पमकरोन्मोघं गाण्डीवेन धनंजयः॥ ते

With his Gandiva, Dharianjaya baffled the object of those warrior who, armed with darts and swords and lances, desired to kill Sahadeva.

Shalya Parva 29.3

संगृहीतायुधान् वाहून् योधानामभिधावताम्। भल्लैश्चिच्छेद बीभत्सुः शिरांस्यपि हयानपि॥

Vibhatsu, with his broad-headed arrows, cut off the horses, the heads and the arms, with weapons in grasp, of those rushing warriors.

Shalya Parva 29.4

हयाः प्रत्यपद्यन्त वसुधां विगतासवः। चरता लोकवीरेण प्रहताः सव्यसाचिना॥

The powerful horses of those great heroes, struck by Savyasachin, dropped down on the earth, dead.

Shalya Parva 29.5

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा दृष्ट्वा स्वबलसंक्षयम्। हतशेषान् समानीय क्रुद्धो रथगणान् बहून्॥ कुञ्जरांश्च हयांश्चैव पादातांश्च समन्ततः। उवाच सहितान् सर्वान् धार्तराष्ट्र इदं वचः॥ समासाद्य रणे सर्वान् पाण्डवान् ससुहृद्गणान्। पाञ्चाल्यं चापि सबलं हत्वा शघ्रं न्यवर्तत॥

Beholding that onslaugh of his own soldiers. O lord, King Duryodhana was filled with rage. Collecting the residue of his cars which was still many hundreds in number, as also his elephants and horse and foot, O scorcher of foes, your son said to those warriors:-"Meeting all the Pandavas with their friends and allies, in this battle and the Panchala prince also with his own army and killing them speedily turn back from the field.

Shalya Parva 29.6

तस्य ते शिरसा गृह्य वचनं युद्धदुर्मदाः। अभ्युद्ययू रणे पार्थांस्तव पुत्रस्य शासनात्॥

Respectfully obeying that mandate, those invincible warriors proceeded once against the Parthas in that battle.

Shalya Parva 29.7

तानभ्यापततः शीघ्रं हतशेषान् महारणे। शरैराशीविषाकारैः पाण्डवाः समवाकिरन्॥

The Pandavas, however, enshrouded with their arrows resembling venomous snakes, all the remnant of the Kaurava army, that thus rushed quickly against them in that dreadful battle. more

Shalya Parva 29.8

तत् सैन्यं भरतश्रेष्ठ मुहूर्तेन महात्मभिः। अवध्यत रणं प्राप्य त्रातारं नाभ्यविन्दत॥

That army, O Bharata chief, as it came to battle, was in no time killed by those great warriors, for it had no protector.

Shalya Parva 29.9

प्रतिष्ठमानं तु भयान्नावतिष्ठति दंशितम्। अश्वैर्विपरिधावद्भिः सैन्येन रजसा वृते॥

These horses running hither and thither that were all covered with the dust raised by the army, the cardinal and they subsidiary points of the horizon could not be discerned.

Shalya Parva 29.10

न प्राज्ञायन्त समरे दिश: सप्रदिशस्तथा। ततस्तु पाण्डवानीकान्निःसृत्य बहवो जनाः॥

Coming out of the Pandava army, O Bharata, many warriors killed your soldiers in a moment in that battle.

Shalya Parva 29.11

अभ्यघ्नंस्तावकान् युद्धे मुहूदिव भारत। ततो नि:शेषमभवत् तत् सैन्यं तव भारत॥ अक्षौहिण्यः समेतास्तु तव पुत्रस्य भारत। एकादश हता युद्धे ताः प्रभो पाण्डुसृञ्जयैः॥

Eleven Akshauhinis, O Bharata, of troops had been collected for your son. All those O lord, were killed by the Pandus and the Srinjayas.

Shalya Parva 29.12

तेषु राजसहस्रेषु तावकेषु महात्मसु। एको दुर्योधनो राजन्नदृश्यत भृशं क्षतः॥

Amongst those thousands and thousands of great kings belonging to your party, only Duryodhana now, O king, exceedingly mangled, survives.

Shalya Parva 29.13

ततो वीक्ष्य दिशः सर्वा दृष्ट्वा शून्यां च मेदिनीम्। विहीनः सर्वयोधैश्च पाण्डवान् वीक्ष्य संयुगे॥ मुदितान् सर्वतः सिद्धान् नर्दमानान् समन्ततः। बाणशब्दरवांश्चैव श्रुत्वा तेषां महात्मनाम्॥ दुर्योधनो महाराज कश्मलेनाभिसंवृतः। अपयाने मनश्चक्रे विहीनबलवाहनः॥

Looking on all sides and seeing the earth vacant, himself deprived all his troops while the Pandavas were joyously roaring aloud for the fulfillment of all their objects, Duryodhana, O king, unable to bear the sound of arrows discharged by those great heroes, became stupefied. Deprived of troops and animals, he made up his mind to fly from the field.

Shalya Parva 29.14

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच निहते मामके सैन्ये निःशेषे शिबिरे कृते। पाण्डवानां बले सूतं किं नु शेषमभूत् तदा।॥

Dhritarashtra said When my soldiers were killed and our camp made entirely empty, what was the strength. O Suta, of the remnant the Pandavas army? 1 desire of know this. Therefore, tell me O Sanjaya, for you are a skillful narrator.

Shalya Parva 29.15

एतन्मे पृच्छतो ब्रूहि कुशलो ह्यसि संजय। यच दुर्योधनो मन्दः कृतवांस्तनयो मम॥ बलक्षयं तथा दृष्ट्वा स एकः पृथिवीपतिः।

Tell me also, O Sanjaya, that which was done by my son, the wicked Duryodhana, that king of the earth, the sole survivor of so many men, when he saw his army entirely destroyed.

Shalya Parva 29.16

संजय उवाच स्थानां द्वे सहस्रे तु सप्त नागशतानि च॥ पञ्च चाश्वसहस्राणि पत्तीनां च शतं शताः। एतच्छेषमभूद् राजन् पाण्डवानां महद् बलम्॥ परिगृह्य हि यद् युद्धे धृष्टद्युम्नो व्यवस्थितः।

Sanjaya continued Two thousand cars, hundred elephants, five thousand horse and ten thousand foot-soldiers was the remnant, O king, of the mighty army of the Pandavas. Looking after this army Dhrishtadyumna waited in that battle.

Shalya Parva 29.17

एकाकी भरतश्रेष्ठ ततो दुर्योधनो नृपः॥ नापश्यत् समरे कंचित् सहायं रथिनां वरः।

Meanwhile, O chief of the Bharatas, king Duryodhana, that best of car-warriors, did not find a single warrior on his side.

Shalya Parva 29.18

नर्दमानान् परान् दृष्ट्वा स्वबलस्य संक्षयम्॥ तथा दृष्ट्वा महाराज एकः स पृथिवीपतिः। हतं स्वहयमुत्सृज्य प्राङ्मुखः प्राद्रवद् भयात्॥

Seeing his enemies roaring aloud and the destruction of his own army, that lord of earth Duryodhana, without a comrade, left off his seven slain horse and fled from the field with face turned eastwards.

Shalya Parva 29.19

एकादशचमूभर्ता पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव। गदामादाय तेजस्वी पदातिः प्रस्थितो हृदम्॥

That lord of eleven Akshauhinis, viz., the energetic Duryodhana, taking up his mace, fled on foot towards a lake.

Shalya Parva 29.20

नातिदूरं ततो गत्वा पद्भ्यामेव नराधिपः। सस्मार वचनं क्षत्तुर्धर्मशीलस्य धीमतः॥ इदं नूनं महाप्राज्ञो विदुरो दृष्ट्वान् पुरा। महद् वैशसमस्माकं क्षत्रियाणां च संयुगे॥ एवं विचिन्तयानस्तु प्रविविक्षुर्हदं नृपः। दुःखसंतप्तहृदयो दृष्ट्वा राजन् बलक्षयम्॥

Before he had proceeded far on foot, the king remembered the words of the intelligent and virtuous Vidura. "Forsooth, this had been foreseen by the wise Vidura viz., this great destruction of Kshatriyas and of ourselves in battle.” Reflecting on this, the king, with heart burning in grief at having seen the extermination of his army, desired to go into the depths of that lake.

Shalya Parva 29.21

पाण्डवास्तु महाराज धृष्टद्युम्नपुरोगमाः। अभ्यद्रवन्त संक्रुद्धास्तव राजन् बलं प्रति॥

The Pandavas, O king, with Dhrishtadyumna at their head, worked up with anger, rushed against the residue of your army.

Shalya Parva 29.22

शक्त्वृष्टिप्रासहन्तानां बलनामभिगर्जताम्। शंकल्पमकरोन्मोघं गाण्डीवेन धनंजयः॥

With his Gandiva, Dhananjaya baffled the object of the Kaurava troops, who, armed with darts and swords and {ances, were crying aloud.

Shalya Parva 29.23

तान् हत्वा निशितैर्वाणैः सामात्यान् सह बन्धुभिः। रथे श्वेतहये तिष्ठन्नर्जुनो बह्वशोभत॥

Having, with his sharp arrows, killed those troops with allies and relatives, Arjuna, as he stood on his car having white horses yoked to it, shone highly beautiful.

Shalya Parva 29.24

सुबलस्य हते पुत्रे सवाजिरथकुञ्जरे। महावनमिव च्छिन्नमभवत् तावकं बलम्॥

Upon the death of Subala's on along with horse, cars and elephants, your army looked like a large forest divested by a storm.

Shalya Parva 29.25

अनेकशतसाहस्र बले दुर्योधनस्य ह। नान्यो महारथो राजन् जीवमानो व्यदृश्यत॥ द्रोणपुत्रादृते वीरात् तथैव कृतवर्मणः। कृपाच गौतमाद् राजन् पार्थिवाच तवात्मजात्॥

In Duryodhana's army then, O monarch, which had many hundred thousands of warriors, not one single car-warrior was alive, save the heroic son of Drona and Kritavarman and Kripa the son of Gotama, the lord of earth viz., your son.

Shalya Parva 29.26

धृष्टद्युम्नस्तु मां दृष्ट्वा हसन् सात्यकिमब्रवीत्। किमनेन गृहीतेन नानेनार्थोऽस्ति जीवता॥

Seeing me, Dhrishtadyumna, laughingly addressed Satyaki, saying-What is the use of seizing the man. We will gain nothing by keeping him alive.

Shalya Parva 29.27

धृष्टद्युम्नवचः श्रुत्वा शिनेर्नप्ता महारथः। उद्यम्य निशितं खड्गं हन्तुं मामुद्यतस्तदा॥

Hearing these words of Dhrishtadyumna, the grandson of Shini, that great car-warrior, raising up his sharp sword, was ready to kill me.

Shalya Parva 29.28

तमागम्य महाप्राज्ञः कृष्णद्वैपायनोऽब्रवीत्। मुच्यता संजयो जीवन्न हन्तव्यः कथंचन॥

Just at the neck of time the wise Vyasa, coming there, said-Let Sanjaya be sent away alive. On no account he should be killed.

Shalya Parva 29.29

द्वैपायनवचः श्रुत्वा शिनेर्नप्ता कृताञ्जलिः। ततो मामब्रवीन्मुक्त्वा स्वस्ति संजय साधय॥

Hearing these words of Vyasa, the grandson of Shini joined his hands and then setting me free, said to me-Peace to you, O Sanjaya, you may go away.

Shalya Parva 29.30

अनुज्ञातस्त्वहं तेन न्यस्तवर्मा निरायुधः। प्रातिष्ठं येन नगरं सायढे रुधिरोक्षितः॥

Permitted by him, myself then putting off my armour and surrendering my weapons, started in the evening for the city, my limbs covered with blood.

Shalya Parva 29.31

क्रोशमात्रमपक्रान्तं गदापाणिमवस्थितम्। एकं दुर्योधनं राजन्नपश्यं भृशविक्षतम्॥

After I had come about two miles O king I beheld Duryodhana, standing alone, mace in hand and greatly wounded.

Shalya Parva 29.32

स तु मामश्रुपूर्णाक्षो नाशक्नोदभिवीक्षितुम्। उपप्रैक्षत मां दृष्ट्वा तथा दीनमवस्थितम्॥

His eyes were full of tears and, therefore, he could not see me. I stood depressed before him. He saw me but could not recognise me.

Shalya Parva 29.33

तं चाहमपि शोचन्तं दृष्ट्वैकाकिनमाहवे। मुहूर्तं नाशकं वक्तुमतिदुःखपरिप्लुतः॥

Beholding him standing alone on the field, I also, laden with grief could not speak a single word for some time.

Shalya Parva 29.34

ततोऽस्मै तदहं सर्वमुक्तवान् ग्रहणं तदा। द्वैपायनप्रसादाच जीवतो मोक्षमाहवे॥

Then I described to him everything about my own capture and my release by the favour of Vyasa.

Shalya Parva 29.35

स मुहूर्तमिव ध्यात्वा प्रतिलभ्य च चेतनाम्। भ्रातूंश्च सर्वसैन्यानि पर्यपृच्छत मां ततः॥

Having reflected for a moment and regained his consciousness he enquired of me after his brother and his soldiers.

Shalya Parva 29.36

तस्मै तदहमाचक्षे सर्वं प्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान्। भ्रातंश्च निहतान् सर्वान् सैन्यं च विनिपातितम्॥

I had seen everything with my eyes and therefore, told him everything viz., that his brothers had all been killed and that his entire army destroyed.

Shalya Parva 29.37

त्रयः किल रथाः शिष्टास्तावकानां नराधिप। इति प्रस्थानकाले मां कृष्णद्वैपायनोऽब्रवीत्॥

I told the king that we had that time only three car-warriors left alive, for Vedavyasa told me so when I set out (froin the Pandaya camp).

Shalya Parva 29.38

स दीर्घमिव निःश्वस्य प्रत्यवेक्ष्य पुनः पुनः। असौ मां पाणिना स्पृष्ट्वा पुत्रस्ते पर्यभाषत॥ त्वदन्यो नेह संग्रामे कश्चिज्जीवति संजय। द्वितीयं नेह पश्यामि ससहायाश्च पाण्डवाः॥

Sighing heavily and looking repeatedly at me, your son touched me with his hand and said-"Save you, O Sanjaya, no one else is alive, amongst those engaged in this battle. See there is no one on my side, while the Pandavas have their allies living.

Shalya Parva 29.39

ब्रूयाः संजय राजानं प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमीश्वरम्। दुर्योधनस्तव सुतः प्रविष्टो हृदमित्युत॥

Say, O Sanjaya, to the blind king Dhritarashtra, that his son Duryodhana has entered into a lake.

Shalya Parva 29.40

सुहृद्धिस्तादृशै_नः पुत्रैर्धातृभिरेव च। पाण्डवैश्च हृते राज्ये को नु जीवेत मादृशः॥

Shorn of friends, deprived of sons and brothers and seeing his kingdom taken by the Pandavas who is there like me that would desire to live.

Shalya Parva 29.41

आचक्षीथाः सर्वमिदं मां च मुक्तं महाहवात्।, अस्मिंस्तोयह्रदे गुप्तं जीवन्तं भृशविक्षतम्॥

Say all this to the king and tell him further that I have escaped with life from that dreadful battle and that, alive, though exceedingly mangled, I shall live within the lake."

Shalya Parva 29.42

एवमुक्त्वा महाराज प्राविशत् तं महाह्रदम्। अस्तम्भयत तोयं च मायया मनुजाधिपः॥

Saying this to me, O king, the king, entered that lake. By his power of illusion king Duryodhana charmed the waters of the lake, making room for him.

Shalya Parva 29.43

तस्मिन् ह्रदं प्रविष्टे तु त्रीन् रथान् श्रान्तवाहनान्। अपश्यं सहितानेकस्तं देशं समुपेयुधः॥

After he had entered that lake, myself, without anybody on my side, saw those three car-warriors coming together there with their tired animals.

Shalya Parva 29.44

कृपं शारद्वतं वीरं द्रौणिं च रथिनां वरम्। भोजं च कृतवर्माणं सहिताशरविक्षतान्॥

They were Kripa, the son of Saradvat and the heroic Ashvatthaman, that best of carwarriors and Kritavarman of Bhoja's race. Wounded with arrows, all of them came together there.

Shalya Parva 29.45

ते सर्वे मामभिप्रेक्ष्य तूर्णमश्वाननोदयन्। उपायाय तु मामूचुर्दिष्ट्या जीवसि संजय॥

Seeing me, they all urged their horses to greater speed and coming up to me, said-By good luck, O Sanjaya, you are still alive.

Shalya Parva 29.46

अपृच्छंश्चैव मां सर्वे पुत्रं तव जनाधिपम्। कच्चिद् दुर्योधनो राजा स नो जीवति संजय॥

All of them then enquired after your son, saying—"Is our king Duryodhana still alive, O Sanjaya?"

Shalya Parva 29.47

आख्यातवानहं तेभ्यस्तदा कुशलिनं नृपम्। तचैव सर्वमाचक्षं यन्मां दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत्॥ ह्रदं चैवाहमाचक्षं यं प्रविष्टो नराधिपः।

I then told them that the king was physically well. I also related to them everything that Duryodhana had said to me. I also pointed out to them the lake where the king had entered.

Shalya Parva 29.48

अश्वत्थामा तु तद् राजन् निशम्य वचनं मम॥ तं ह्रदं विपुलं प्रेक्ष्य करुणं पर्यदेवयत्। अहो धिक् स न जानाति जीवतोऽस्मान् नराधिपः॥६१ पर्याप्ता हि वयं तेन सहं योधयितुं परान्।

O king, having heard those words, then Ashvatthaman looked at that extensive lake and began to wail in grief, saying, "Alas, Alas, the king knew not that we are still alive! With him amongst us, we are still quite competent to fight with our enemies."

Shalya Parva 29.49

ते त तत्र चिरं कालं विलय न महारथाः॥ प्राद्रवन् रथिनां श्रेष्ठा दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुसुतान् रणे।

Having wept there for a long time, those great car-warriors fled away seeing the sons of Pandu.

Shalya Parva 29.50

ते तु मां रथमारोप्य कृपस्य सुपरिष्कृतम्॥ सेनानिवेशमाजग्मुर्हतशेषास्त्रयो स्थाः।

Those three car-warriors, the remnant of our army, took me up on the well-adorned car of Kripa and then set out for the Kuru camp.

Shalya Parva 29.51

तत्र गुल्मा: परित्रस्ताः सूर्ये चास्तमिते सति॥ सर्वे विचुक्रुशुः श्रुत्वा पुत्राणां तव संक्षयम्।

The sun had set a little before. Learning that all your sons had been killed the troops, forming the outposts of the camp, wept aloud.

Shalya Parva 29.52

ततो वृद्धा महाराज योषितां रक्षिणो नराः॥ राजदारानुपादाय प्रययुनगरं प्रति।

Then, O king, the old men, that had been engaged to look after the ladies of the royal household, set out for the city, taking the princesses after them.

Shalya Parva 29.53

तत्र विक्रोशमानानां रुदतीनां च सर्वशः॥ प्रादुरासीन्महाशब्दः श्रुत्वा तद् बलसंक्षयम्।

The attendants and ladies wept aloud when they heard of the destruction of the whole army.

Shalya Parva 29.54

ततस्ता योषितो राजन् क्रन्दन्त्यो वै मुहुर्मुहुः॥ कुरर्य इव शब्देन नादयन्त्यो महीतलम्।

O king, crying ceaselessly, the women caused the earth to resound with their voices like a warm of she-ospreys.

Shalya Parva 29.55

आजघ्नुः करजैश्चापि पाणिभिश्च शिरांस्युत॥ लुलुचुश्च तदा केशान् क्रोशत्यस्तत्र तत्र ह।

They tore their bodies with their nails and struck their heads with their hands and loosened their braids, crying all the while aloud.

Shalya Parva 29.56

हाहाकारविनादिन्यो विनिघ्नन्त्य उरांसि च॥ शोचन्त्यस्तत्र रुरुदुः क्रन्दमाना विशाम्पते।

Filling the sky with exclamations of grief and beating their breasts, they cried aloud and wept, O king.

Shalya Parva 29.57

ततो दुर्योधनामात्याः साश्रुकण्ठा भृशातुराः॥ राजदारानुपादाय प्रययुर्नगरं प्रति।

Then the friends of Duryodhana, deeply afflicted and their voice suppressed by their tears, started for the city, taking the royal ladies with them.

Shalya Parva 29.58

वेत्रव्यासक्तहस्ताश्च द्वाराध्यक्षा विशाम्पते॥ शयनीयानि शुभ्राणि स्पास्तरणवन्ति च।

The camp-guards quickly fled towards the city, taking with them many white beds covered with rich sheets.

Shalya Parva 29.59

समादाय ययुस्तूर्णं नगरं दाररक्षिणः॥ आस्थायाश्वतरीयुक्तान् स्यन्दनानपरे पुनः। स्वान् स्वान् दारानुपादाय प्रययुनगरं प्रति॥

Others, Placing their wives on cars drawn my mules, set out for the city.

Shalya Parva 29.60

अदृष्टपूर्वा या नार्यो भास्करेणापि वेश्मसु। ददृशुस्ता महाराज जना याताः पुरं प्रति॥

Those ladies, O king, who were not before seen even by the sun, were not, as they started for the city, exposed to the view of the common people.

Shalya Parva 29.61

ताः स्त्रियो भरतश्रेष्ठ सौकुमार्यसमन्विताः। प्रययुर्नगरं तूर्णं हतस्वजनबान्धवाः॥

Those women, O head of the Bharatas, who were very delicate, now proceeded quickly towards the city, having lost their dear ones and kinsmen.

Shalya Parva 29.62

आलोपालाविपालेभ्यो द्रवन्तो नगरं प्रति। ययुर्मनुष्याः सम्भ्रान्ता भीमसेनभयार्दिताः॥

The very cowherds and shepherds and common men, stricken with panic for the fear of Bhimasena, fled towards the city.

Shalya Parva 29.63

अपि चैषां भयं तीव्र पार्थेभ्योऽभूत् सुदारुणम्। प्रेक्षमाणास्तदान्योन्यमाधावनगरं प्रति॥

They were also filled with a great fear of the Parthas. Looking at one another, all of them fled towards the city.

Shalya Parva 29.64

तस्मिंस्तथा वर्तमाने विद्रवे भृशदारुणे। युयुत्सुः शोकसम्मूढः प्राप्तकालमचिन्तयत्॥

During that general flight accompanied with fear, Yuyutsu, beside himself with grief, thought upon what he should do under the present circumstances.

Shalya Parva 29.65

जितो दुर्योधनः संख्ये पाण्डवैर्भीमविक्रमैः। एकादशचमूभर्ता भ्रातरश्चास्य सूदिताः॥

Duryodhana has been defeated in battle by the powerful Pandavas. He had eleven Akshauhinis of soldiers under hiin. All his brothers have been killed.

Shalya Parva 29.66

हताश्च कुरवः सर्वे भीष्मद्रोणपुरःसराः। अहमेको विमुक्तस्तु भाग्ययोगाद् यदृच्छया॥

All the Kauravas, led by Bhishma and Drona, have died. By good luck, only I have been saved.

Shalya Parva 29.67

विदूतानि च सर्वाणि शिविराणि समन्ततः। इतस्तत: पलायन्ते हतनाथा हतौजसः॥

All those that were in the Kuru camp have fled. Alas, dispirited and helpless they are flying on all sides.

Shalya Parva 29.68

अदृष्टपूर्वा दुःखार्ता भयव्याकुललोचनाः। हरिणा इव वित्रस्ता वीक्षमाणा दिशो दशः॥

Such a spectacle had never been witnessed before. Assailed with sorrow, with eyes anxious in fear, they are flying away on all directions like a herd of deer looking at one another.

Shalya Parva 29.69

दुर्योधनस्य सचिवा ये केचिदवशेषिताः। राजदारानुपादाय प्रययुनगरं प्रति॥

Amongst the counsellors of Duryodhana those, that are yet alive, have fled towards the city, taking with them the royal ladies.

Shalya Parva 29.70

प्राप्तकालमहं मन्ये प्रवेश तैः सह प्रभुम्। युधिष्ठिरमनुज्ञाय वासुदेवं तथैव च॥ एतम) महाबाहुरुभयो:स न्यवेदयत्।

I think, O lord, that the time has appeared when I also should enter the city with them, after taking the permission of Yudhishthira and Vasudeva. For this purpose that powerful prince appeared before both those heroes.

Shalya Parva 29.71

तस्य प्रीतोऽभवद् राजा नित्यं करुणवेदिता॥ परिष्वज्य महाबाहुर्वैश्यापुत्रं व्यसर्जयत्।

King Yudhishthira, who is always kind,। became highly pleased with him. The powerful Pandava embraced that child of a Vaishya mother and sent him away affectionately.

Shalya Parva 29.72

ततः स रथमास्थाय दुतमश्वानचोदयत्॥ संवाहयितवांश्चापि राजदारान् पुरं प्रति।

Getting upon his own car, he urged on his horse. He then looked after the departure of the ladies of the royal seraglio for the city.

Shalya Parva 29.73

तैश्चैव सहित: क्षिप्रमस्तं गच्छति भास्करे॥ प्रविष्टो हास्तिनपुरं बाष्पकण्ठोऽश्रुलोचनः।

The sun was setting. With those ladies, Yuyutsu entered the city of Hastinapur, with tearful eyes and with voice suppressed in grief.

Shalya Parva 29.74

अपश्यत महाप्राज्ञं विदुरं साश्रुलोचनम्॥ राज्ञः समीयान्निष्क्रान्तं शोकोपहतचेतसम्।

He then saw the highly wise Vidura sitting with tearful eyes. He had come away from Dhritarashtra, his heart possessed by great sorrow.

Shalya Parva 29.75

तमब्रवीत् सत्यधृतिः प्रणतं त्वग्रतः स्थितम्॥ दिष्ट्या कुरुक्षये वृत्ते अस्मिस्त्वं पुत्र जीवसि।

Saluting Vidura, he stood before him. Truthful Vidura said to him-"By good luck, O son you have survived the Kurus.

Shalya Parva 29.76

युयुत्सुरुवाच विना राज्ञः प्रेवशाद् वै किमसि त्वमिहागतः॥ एतद् वै कारणं सर्वं विस्तरेण निवेदय। निहते शकुनौ तत्र सज्ञातिसुतबान्धवे॥ हतशेषपरीवारो राजा दुर्योधनस्ततः। स्वकं स हयमुत्सृज्य प्राङ्मुखः प्राद्रवद् भयात्॥

Why, however have you come without king Duryodhana, in your company? Tell me in detail the cause thereof. "Yuyutsu then said." After the destruction of Shakuni, O sire, with all his relations and friends, king Duryodhana, leaving behind his horse, fled away in fear towards the east.

Shalya Parva 29.77

अपक्रान्ते तु नृपतौ स्कन्धावारनिवेशनात्। भयव्याकुलितं सर्वं प्राद्रवन्नगरं प्रति॥

After the king's flight, all the Kuru people, worked up with fear, fled towards the city.

Shalya Parva 29.78

ततो राज्ञः कलत्राणि भ्रातृणां चास्य सर्वतः। वाहनेषु समारोप्य अध्यक्षाः प्राद्रवन् भयात्॥

Then the guards of the ladies, placing the wives of the king, as also those of his brothers, on vehicles, fled away in fear.

Shalya Parva 29.79

ततोऽहं समनुज्ञाप्य राजानं सहकेशवम्। प्रविष्टो हास्तिनपुरं रक्षन्ल्लोकान् प्रधावितान्॥

With the permission of king Yudhishthira and Keshava, I started for Hastinapura, for protecting the people thus flying away.

Shalya Parva 29.80

एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं वैश्यापुत्रेण भाषितम्। प्राप्तकालमिति श्रुत्वा विदुरः सर्वधर्मवित्॥ अपूजयदमेयात्मा युयुत्सुं वाक्यमब्रवीत्।

Hearing those words of the son of Dhritarashtra's Vaishya wife the great Vidura, conversant with practices and feelings for the hour, praised the eloquent Yuyutsu. come

Shalya Parva 29.81

प्राप्तकालमिदं सर्वं ब्रुवता भरतक्षये॥ रक्षितः कुलधर्मश्च सानुक्रोशतया त्वया।

And he said-"You have acted properly, thinking what has about of this destruction of all the Bharatas. You have also, from pity, maintained the honour of your family.

Shalya Parva 29.82

दिष्ट्या त्वामिह संग्रामादस्माद् वीरक्षयात् पुरम्॥ समागतमपश्याम ांशुमन्तमिव प्रजाः।

By good luck we see you alive in this terrible battle in which heroes have been killed like creatures beholding the blazing sun.

Shalya Parva 29.83

अन्धस्य नृपतेर्यष्टिर्लुब्धस्य दीर्घदर्शिनः॥ बहुशो याच्यमानस्य दैवोपहतचेतसः। त्वमेको व्यसानर्तस्य ध्रियसे पुत्र सर्वथा॥

O son, you are now the only support of the blind king shorn of foresight, afflicted with calamity, struck by Destiny and who though repeatedly dissuaded, could not abstain from following his evil policy.

Shalya Parva 29.84

अद्य त्वमिह विश्रान्तः श्वोऽभिगन्ता युधिष्ठिरम्। एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं विदुरः साश्रुलोचनः॥

Take rest here for this day. Tomorrow you may go to Yudhishthira."-Having said these words, Vidura, with tearful eyes.

Shalya Parva 29.85

पौरजानपदैर्दुःखाद्धाहेति भृशनादितम्॥ निरानन्दं गतश्रीकं हृताराममिवाशयम्।

Took leave of Yuyutsu and entered the palace of the king which was filled with the lamentations of woe-stricken citizens.

Shalya Parva 29.86

शून्यरूपमपध्वस्तं दुःखाद् दुःखतरोऽभवत्॥ विदुरः सर्वधर्मज्ञो विकुवेनान्तरात्मना।

The cheerless place was shorn of beauty, comfort and happiness. It was all empty and disorderly. Already filled with grief, Vidura's sorrow increased at that spectacle.

Shalya Parva 29.87

विवेश नगरे राजन् निःशश्वास शनैः शनैः॥

Dutiful Vidura, with a sorrowful heart, entered the palace, sighing heavily.

Shalya Parva 29.88

युयुत्सुरपि तां सात्रिं स्वगृहे न्यवसत् तदा। वन्द्यमानः स्वकैश्चापि नाभ्यनन्दत् सुदुःखितः। चिन्तयानः क्षयं तीव्र भरतानां परस्परम्॥

As regards Yuyutsu, he passed that night in his own house. Possessed by miscry, he could find no delight at the panegyrics with which he was welcomed. He passed the time, thinking of the terrible onslaught of the Bharatas.
