Kishkindha Kanda — Sarga 10
ततः क्रोधसमाविष्टं संरब्धं तमुपागतम्। अहं प्रसादयांचक्रे भ्रातरं हितकाम्यया॥
Then wishing for my welfare I strove to propitiate my angry brother, wrought up with wrath, who was seated (there).
Kishkindha Kanda 10.1
दिष्ट्यासि कुशली प्राप्तो निहतश्च त्वया रिपुः। अनाथस्य हि मे नाथस्त्वमेकोऽनाथनन्दन॥
By good luck it is that you had come off safely; and that you had slain the foe. O you that rejoicest the forlorn, you are the only protector of me who am helpless.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.2
इदं बहुशलाकं ते पूर्णचन्द्रमिवोदितम्। छत्रं सवालव्यजनं प्रतीच्छस्व मया धृतम्॥
I hold this. umbrella furnished with many ribs, resembling the moon risen; as well as this chowrī containing hair,—do you accept my service.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.3
आर्तस्तस्य बिलद्वारि स्थितः संवत्सरं नृप। दृष्ट्वा च शोणितं द्वारि बिलाच्चापि समुत्थितम्॥ शोकसंविग्नहृदयो भृशं व्याकुलितेन्द्रियः।
O king, suffering greatly, I remained for a whole year at the mouth of the cave. And seeing blood issuing from the cave, I had my heart agitated with grief and my senses extremely overwhelmed.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.4
अपिधाय बिलद्वारं शैलशृङ्गेण तत् तदा॥ तस्माद् देशादपाक्रम्य किष्किन्धां प्राविशं पुनः।
Then closing up the mouth of the cavern with a mountain summit, and returning from that place, I again came back to Kiskindhā.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.5
विषादात्विह मां दृष्ट्वा पौरैर्मन्त्रिभिरेव च॥ अभिषिक्तो न कामेन तन्मे क्षन्तुं त्वमर्हसि।
Seeing me enter in a dejected mood, the citizens and counsellors installed me, but it was not done with my will. Therefore it behoves you to forgive me.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.6
त्वमेव राजा मानार्हः सदा चाहं यथा पुरा॥ राजभावे नियोगोऽयं मम त्वविरहात्कृतः। सामात्यपौरनगरं स्थितं निहतकण्टकम्॥ न्यासभूतमिदं राज्यं तव निर्यातयाम्यहम्।
You are the king, O worthy of honour; and I am, as before, ever (your servant). I was entrusted with regal power in consequence of your absence. This kingdom consisting of courtiers and citizens, remains now rid of its thorns. It was established in me as a trust. And I protected it as such.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.7
मा च रोषं कृथाः सौम्य मम शत्रुनिषूदन॥ याचे त्वां शिरसा राजन् मया बद्धोऽयमञ्जलिः।
Do not get wroth, O miid one, O destroyer of foes, I beseech you with bent head, and, O king, with joined hands.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.8
बलादस्मिन् समागम्य मन्त्रिभिः पुरवासिभिः॥ राजभावे नियुक्तोऽहं शून्यदेशजिगीषया।
With the view of preventing any one to wish to conquer this kingdom vacant (of its ruler the citizens and counsellors unanimously, by force, entrusted me with regal authority.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.9
स्त्रिग्धमेवं ब्रुवाणं मां स विनिर्भय॑ वानरः॥ धिक्त्वामिति च मामुक्त्वा बहु तत्तदुवाच ह।
As I said this softly, the monkey reproaching me, said to me 'Fie on you,' and censured me greatly.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.10
प्रकृतीश्च समानीय मन्त्रिणश्चैव सम्मतान्॥ मामाह सुहृदां मध्ये वाक्यं परमगर्हितम्।
And bringing together the subjects and favourite counsellors, spoke to me, before friends, highly improper words.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.11
विदितं वो मया रात्रौ मायावी स महासुरः॥ मां समाह्वयत क्रुद्धो युद्धाकाङ्क्षी तदा पुरा ।
“You know that formerly one night the mighty Asura Mayavi, getting' enraged, challenged me (to a fight) desirous of an encounter with me.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.12
तस्य तद्भाषितं श्रुत्वा निःसृतोऽहं नृपालयात्॥ अनुयातश्च मां तूर्णमयं भ्राता सुदारुणः।
Hearing his speech I sallied out of the palace, and was followed by this horrible brother of mine.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.13
स तु दृष्टैव मां रात्रौ सद्वितीयं महाबलः॥ प्राद्रवद् भयसंत्रस्तो वीक्ष्यावां समुपागतौ। अभिद्रुतस्तु वेगेन विवेश स महाबिलम्॥
Thereat seeing me with one to assist me, and finding that we had come upon him, that mighty Asura, fled, seized with fear. And fleeing on, he (at length) swiftly entered a huge hole.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.14
तं प्रविष्टं विदित्वा तु सुघोरं सुमहबिलम्। अयमुक्तोऽथ मे भ्राता मया तु क्रूरदर्शनः॥
Knowing that he had entered that dreadful and large cave, I spoke to my brother of a crooked presence.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.15
अहत्वा नास्ति मे शक्तिः प्रतिगन्तुमितः पुरीम्। बिलद्वारि प्रतीक्ष त्वं यावदेनं निहन्म्यहम्॥
Without slaying (this Asura) I cannot return to the palace. Do you wait at the mouth of the cave while I slay him.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.16
स्थितोऽयमिति मत्वाहं प्रविष्टस्तु दुरासदम्। तं मे मार्गयतस्तत्र गतः संवत्सरस्तदा॥
This one is stationed here-thinking thus, I entered that inaccessible cave. And as I searched (for the Asura), one entire year passed away.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.17
स तु दृष्टो मया शत्रुरनिर्वेदाद् भयावहः। निहतश्च मया सद्यः स सर्वैः सह बन्धुभिः॥
That wicked wight who had roused my alarm in consequence of his disappearance, was (at length) slain by me in one day, along with his friends.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.18
तस्यास्यात्तु प्रवृत्तेन रुधिरौघेण तद्विलम्। पूर्णमासीद् दुराक्रामं स्तनतस्तस्य भूतले॥
Then as he emitted yells in the subterranean region, the cave was filled with his blood and it became difficult to come out of it.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.19
सूदयित्वा तु तं शत्रु विक्रान्तं तमहं सुखम्। निष्क्रामं नेह पश्यामि बिलस्य पिहितं सुखम्॥
Having with ease slain my powerful foe, I could not find the outlet of the cavern, its mouth having been closed.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.20
विक्रोशमानस्य तु मे सुग्रीवेति पुनः पुनः। यतः प्रतिवचो नास्ति ततोऽहं भृशदुःखितः॥
Then as I again and again cried Sugrīva, Sugrīva, I became exceedingly sorry for not receiving any reply.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.21
पादप्रहारैस्तु मया बहुभिः परिपातितम्। ततोऽहं तेन निष्क्रम्य पथा पुरमुपागतः॥
Thereat I threw down the stone after striking it many times with my legs. Then coming out by its mouth, I have come to this city.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.22
तत्रानेनास्मि संरुद्धो राज्यं मृगयताऽऽत्मनः। सुग्रीवेण नृशंसेन विस्मृत्य भ्रातृसौहृदम्॥
Seeking my kingdom, the crafty Sugrīva had shut me up there forgetting fraternal love.'
Kishkindha Kanda 10.23
एवमुक्त्वा तु मां तत्र वस्त्रेणैकेन वानरः। तद् निर्वासयामास वाली विगतसाध्वसः॥
Saying this, that monkey, the shameless Vali, exiled me with a single cloth on.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.24
तेनाहमपविद्धश्च हृतदारश्च राघव। तद्भयाश्च महीं सर्वां क्रान्तवान् सवनार्णवाम्॥ ऋष्यमूकं गिरिवरं भार्याहरणदुःखितः। प्रविष्टोऽस्म दुराधर्ष वालिनः कारणान्तरे॥
O Rāghava, I have been discomfited by him, and been deprived of my wife. And from fear of him, I have wandered over the whole earth having forest and seas. And aggrieved in consequence of my having been deprived of my wife. I have (at length) entered this best of mountains, Rsyamuka, which for a certain reason* is incapable of being approached by Vali. *In consequence of Matanga's curse.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.25
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं वैरानुकथनं महत्। अनागसा मया प्राप्तं व्यसनं पश्य राघव॥
Thus have I mentioned to you the great cause of this hostility, O Rāghava, innocent as I am, I have come by this mighty misfortune.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.26
वालिनश्च भयात् तस्य सर्वलोकाभयापह। कर्तुमर्हसि मे वीर प्रसादं तस्य निग्रहात्॥
O you that inspirest the fear of all creatures, by chastising Vāli it behoveth you to grant your grace to me, who am tormented with fear in connection with Vali, O hero.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.27
एवमुक्तः स तेजस्वी धर्मज्ञो धर्मसंहितम्। वचनं वक्तुमारेभे सुग्रीवं प्रहसनिव॥
Thus accosted, that energetic one knowing righteousness, smiling, began to address Sugrīva in words fraught with morality.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.28
अमोघाः सूर्यसंकाशा निशिता मे शरा इमे। तस्मिन् वालिनि दुर्वृत्ते पतिष्यन्ति रुषान्विताः॥
These sharpened shafts of mine, resembling the sun, and never missing, shall furiously fall upon the wicked Vāli.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.29
यावत् तं नहि पश्येयं तव भार्यापहारिणम्। तावत् स जीवेत् पापात्मा वाली चारित्रदूषकः॥
So long as you did not see that stealer of your wife, so long only shall the impious Väli of vile character, live.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.30
आत्मानुमानात् पश्यामि मग्नस्त्वं शोकसागरे। त्वामहं तारयिष्यामि बाढं प्राप्स्यसि पुष्कलम्॥
By what I myself feel, I see that you had sunk in a sea of sorrow. But I will deliver you; and you shall attain both your wife as well as this kingdom.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.31
तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा हर्षपौरुषवर्धनम्। सुग्रीवः परमप्रीतः सुमहद्वाक्यमब्रवीत्॥
Hearing that speech of his capable of enhancing joy and manliness, Sugrīva overjoyed, spoke those words informed with high sense.
Kishkindha Kanda 10.32
