Kishkindha Kanda — Sarga 66

अनेकशतसाहस्री विषण्णां हरिवाहिनीम्। जाम्बवान् समुदीक्ष्यैवं हनूमन्तमथाब्रवीत्॥

Surveying the monkey-host consisting of many hundred and thousand,-crest-fallen, Jämbavān thus spoke to Hanumān,

Kishkindha Kanda 66.1

वीर वानरलोकस्य सर्वशास्त्रविदां वर। तूष्णीमेकान्तमाश्रित्य हनूमन् किं न जल्पसि॥

O hero among the monkey-multitude, O be of those versed in all branches of learning, staying apart silent, why did you not speak?

Kishkindha Kanda 66.2

हनूमन्हरिराजस्य सुग्रीवस्य समो ह्यसि। रामलक्ष्मणयोश्चापि तेजसा च बलेन च॥

O Hanuman, you are alil in energy and strength, equal to Sugriva, monarch monkeys, and to Rāma and Lakşmaņa.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.3

अरिष्टनेमिनः पुत्रो वैनतेयो महाबलः। गरुत्मानिव विख्यात उत्तमः सर्वपक्षिणाम्॥

Aristanemi's son the mighty Vainateya,* famous by the cognomen of Garutmā, is the foremost of birds. *Offspring of Vinatā, Garura's mother.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.4

बहुशो हि मया दृष्टः सागरे स महाबलः। भुजङ्गानुद्धरन् पक्षी महाबाहुर्महाबलः॥

Many a time and oft. I have see that exceedingly powerful, mighty-armed one, endowed with strength of will,-raise up serpents in the ocean.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.5

पक्षयोर्यद् बलं तस्य भुजवीर्यबलं तव। विक्रमश्चापि वेगश्च न ते तेनापहीयते॥

The strength that is in his wings, is equal to the might and virtues your arm.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.6

बलं बुद्धिश्च तेजश्च सत्त्वं च हरिपुङ्गव। विशिष्टं सर्वभूतेषु किमात्मानं न सज्जसे।७।।

Your energy and prowess are not surpassed by him And your strength, and your understanding, your energy, and your vigour, O foremost of monkeys, (is known among all creatures). Why did not you prepare yourself furnished with everything that is noble or great, (for this feat)?

Kishkindha Kanda 66.7

अप्सराऽप्सरसां श्रेष्ठा विख्याता पुञ्जिकस्थला। अञ्जनेति परिख्याता पत्नी केसरिणो हरेः॥ विख्याता त्रिषु लोकेषु रूपेणाप्रतिमा भुवि। अभिशापादभूत् तात कपित्वे कामरूपिणी॥ दुहिता वानरेन्द्रस्य कुञ्जरस्य महात्मनः। मानुषं विग्रहं कृत्वा रूपयौवनशालिनी॥ विचित्रमाल्याभरणा कदाचित् क्षौमधारिणी। अचरत् पर्वतस्याग्रे प्रावृडम्बुदसंनिभे॥

That fore most of Apsarās,—the famous Punjikathală, more famed under the name of Añjana, is the spouse of the monkey Kesarin used over the three worlds, and incomparable on earth by to of her beauty, by an imprecation, my son, she was of in the monkey-race, capable of wearing slopes at her Once on a time, that daughter of the high-souled lord monkeys, Kunjara,-endued with youth and beauty,-used in a delightful garland, and clad in silk, —assum human form, was ranging on the summit of a mountain, ambling a mass of clouds in the rainy season.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.8

तस्या वस्त्रं विशालाक्ष्याः पीतं रक्तदशं शुभम्। स्थितायाः पर्वतस्याग्रे मारुतोऽपहरच्छनैः॥

It came moss that as that one of expansive eyes was standing on the mit of the mount, the Wind gently stole away her elegant bow cloth with crimson skirts.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.9

स ददर्श ततस्तस्या वृत्तावूरू सुसंहतौ। स्तनौ च पीनौ सहितौ सुजातं चारु चाननम्॥ तां बलादायतश्रोणी तनुमध्यां यशस्विनीम्। दृष्ट्वैव शुभसर्वाङ्गी पवनः काममोहितः॥ स तां भुजाभ्यां दीर्घाभ्यां पर्यष्वजत मारुतः। मन्मथाविष्टसर्वाङ्गो गतात्मा तामनिन्दिताम्॥

He had a sight of her and fine face, together with her well-developed breasts. As soon as the Wind saw that illustrious one of spacious and slender waist, and whose every limb was lovely,-was amain overcome by desire. And all his frame sessed by Manmatha, and deprived of self, the Wind emced that blameless one by means of his long arms.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.10

सा तु तत्रैव सम्भ्रान्ता सुव्रता वाक्यमब्रवीत्। एकपत्नीव्रतमिदं को नाशयितुमिच्छति॥

There influenced by fear, that one of excellent vows said,-no is it that desireth to lay violent hands upon my chastity?

Kishkindha Kanda 66.11

अनाया वचः तुत्वा मारुतः प्रत्यभाषत। न त्वां हिंसामि सुश्रोणि माभूत् ते मनसो भयम्॥

Hearing Anjana's words, the Wind answered, do not wrong you, O you of shapely hips. Let not her enter your heart.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.12

मनसाऽस्मि गतो यत् त्वां परिष्वज्य यशस्विनि। वीर्यवान् बुद्धिसम्पन्नस्तव पुत्रो भविष्यति॥

As, O famous damsel, by embracing the, I have mentally entered into your womb, you shall her a son, intelligent and endued with prowess.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.13

महासत्त्वो महातेजा महाबलपराक्रमः। लङ्घने प्लवने चैव भविष्यति मया समः।।१९

And, bed with great strength, and possessing exceeding energy, having vast vigour, he shall equal me in bound and leaping.'

Kishkindha Kanda 66.14

एवमुक्ता ततस्तुष्टा जननी ते महाकपे। गुहायां त्वां महाबाहो प्रजज्ञे प्लवगर्षभ॥

Thus addressed, O mighty monkeys, your other, O long-armed one, O foremost of monkeys, your has to you in a cave.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.15

अभ्युत्थितं ततः सूर्यं बालो दृष्ट्वा महावने। फलं चेति जिघृक्षुस्त्वमुत्पत्याभ्युत्पतो दिवम्॥

In that mighty forest, you, a child, desirous of eating, seeing the sun risen, and taking on to be a fruit, sprang up and leaped into the sky.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.16

शतानि त्रीणि गत्वाथ योजनानां महाकपे। तेजसा तस्य निर्धूतो न विषादं गतस्ततः॥

O mighty monkey, going three thousand Yojanas, you, struck by as energy, didst not feel poverty of spirit.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.17

त्वामप्युपगतं तूर्णमन्तरिक्षं महाकपे। क्षिप्तमिन्द्रेण ते वज्रं कोपाविष्टेन तेजसा ॥

And, seeing you shing through the heavens, O mighty monkey, Indra, owing wrath, hurled his thunder-bolt at you.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.18

तदा शैलाग्रशिखरे वामो हनुरभज्यत। ततो हि नामधेयं ते हनुमानिति कीर्तितम्॥

Thereat, breaking your left jaw, you (didst fall) on the mountain From this circumstance, your name has been known Hanuman.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.19

ततस्त्वां निहतं दृष्ट्वा वायुर्गन्धवहः स्वयम्। त्रैलोक्यं भृशसंक्रुद्धो न ववौ वै प्रभञ्जनः॥

Witnessing you beaten back, that bearer of fumes himself, the Wind, that breaketh everything before in wrath did not blow through the three worlds.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.20

सम्भ्रान्ताश्च सुराः सर्वे त्रैलोक्ये क्षुभिते सति। प्रसादयन्ति संक्रुद्धं मारुतं भुवनेश्वराः॥

Thereat, all gods-lords of the universeinfluenced by fear in consequence of the triune world waxing agitated, began to path the wrathful Wind.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.21

प्रसादिते च पवने ब्रह्मा तुभ्यं वरं ददौ। अशस्त्रवध्यतां तात समरे सत्यविक्रम॥

And on the Wind being mollified, Bra conferred on him a boon, saying,–O child, O you of prowess, (your son) shall be incapable of being slain in be by means of weapons.'

Kishkindha Kanda 66.22

वज्रस्य च निपातेन विरुजं त्वां समीक्ष्य च। सहस्रनेत्रः प्रीतात्मा ददौ ते वरमुत्तमम्॥ स्वच्छन्दतश्च मरणं तव स्यादिति वै प्रभो।

And seeing him sustain (serious) injury consequent on the impact of the thunder. He of a thousand eyes, pleased in his soul, also confer on (you) and excellent boon, O lord, saying, 'Your death: take place according to your will.' *Hanuman.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.23

स त्वं केसरिणः पुत्रः क्षेत्रजो भीमविक्रमः॥ मारुतस्यौरसः पुत्रस्तेजसा चापि तत्समः।

You, endowed with drawful vigour, are the son of Kesarī by his wife; and, resemble the Wind in energy, you had sprung from his loins.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.24

त्वं हि वायुसुतो वत्स प्लवने चापि तत्समः॥ वयमद्य गतप्राणा भवानस्मासु साम्प्रतम्। दाक्ष्यविक्रमसम्पन्नः कपिराज इवापरः॥

The are the son of the Wind, my child-equal to him in power of leaping. Now we are without our lives. And you, endowed with dexterity and vigour, and like another I of the monkeys,+ are before us. *Sugriva.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.25

त्रिविक्रमे मया तात सशैलवनकानना। त्रिःसप्तकृत्वः पृथिवी परिक्रान्ता प्रदक्षिणम्॥

On the occasion of Vişnu enveloping the earth with three steps, I, O child, had circa ambulated the earth with her mountains, woods and fore one and twenty times.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.26

तथा चौषधयोऽस्माभिः संचिता देवशासनात्। निर्मथ्यममृतं याभिस्तदानीं नो महद्बलम्॥

Then, commissioned by the gods, had gathered annuals, which (bcing cast on the deep), cat ambrosia to come out after churning. At that time, god was our strength.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.27

स इदानीमहं वृद्धः परिहीनपराक्रमः। साम्प्रतं कालमस्माकं भवान् सर्वगुणान्वितः॥

But now I have grown old, and prowess has left me. At present we have you, furnish with every virtue.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.28

तद् विजृम्भस्व विक्रान्त प्लवतामुत्तमो ह्यसि। त्वद्वीर्यं द्रष्टुकामा हि सर्वा वानरवाहिनी॥

Therefore, possessed of vigour, do I bestir yourself, and bound over (the main). You are the qualified of all. This entire monkey host is eager to bell your prowess.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.29

उत्तिष्ठ हरिशार्दूल लङ्घयस्व महार्णवम्। परा हि सर्वभूतानां हनुमन् या गतिस्तव॥

O redoubtable monkey, do you arise! leap over the mighty ocean. Your motion, Hanumān, asseth that of all beings.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.30

विषण्णा हरयः सर्वे हनुमन् किमुपेक्षसे। विक्रमस्व महावेग विष्णुस्त्रीन् विक्रमानिव ॥

All the monkeys are depressed. O Hanuman, did you overlook this? Put forth your you endowed with mighty vehemence, like Vişnu sing over the three worlds in three steps.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.31

ततः कपीनामृषभेण चोदितः प्रतीतवेगः पवनात्मजः कपिः। प्रहर्षयंस्तां हरिवीरवाहिनी चकार रूपं महदात्मनस्तदा॥

Exhorted by foremost of monkeys, that one famed for has speech, that key, the offspring of the Wind-god, gladdening the monkey-chiefs, wore (a fit) shape for crossing the ocean.* *Another epithet of Hanumān, Pavanātmaja-son to the Wind?? on the score of Redundency.

Kishkindha Kanda 66.32
