Yuddha Kanda — Sarga 56

तदृष्ट्वा सुमहत्कर्म कृतं वानरसत्तमैः। क्रोधमाहारयामास युधि तीव्रमकम्पनः॥

And witnessing that mighty exploit of the foremost of the monkeys, Akampana waxed furious with wrath.

Yuddha Kanda 56.1

क्रोधमूर्च्छितरूपस्तु धुन्वन्यरमकार्मुकम्। दृष्ट्वा तु कर्म शत्रूणां सारथिं वाक्यमब्रवीत्॥

And transported with passion, he, twanging his mighty bow seeing that feat of his foe, addressed his charioteer saying.

Yuddha Kanda 56.2

तत्रैव तावत्त्वरितो रथं प्रापय सारथे। एते च बलिनो घ्नन्ति सुबहूनराक्षसारणे॥

O charioteer, swiftly conduct you the car to that same place. These powerful ones are slaying innumerable Rākşasas in fight.

Yuddha Kanda 56.3

एते च बलवन्तो वा भीमकोपाश्च वानराः। द्रुमशैलप्रहरणास्तिष्ठन्ति प्रमुखे मम॥

And all those vigorous monkeys of dreadful deeds stay before me, armed with trees and rocks.

Yuddha Kanda 56.4

एतानिहन्तुमिच्छामि समरश्लाघिनो ह्यहम्। एतैः प्रमथितं सर्वं रक्षसां दृश्यते बलम्॥

Those, pluming themselves overmuch on their martial worth, I intended to slay in battle. And all this Rākşasa force appeared to be harassed by these.

Yuddha Kanda 56.5

ततः प्रचलिताश्वेन रथेन रथिनां वरः। हरीनभ्यपतराच्छरजालैरकम्पनः॥

Then on a car drawn by moving steeds, Akampana from a distance attacked the monkeys with showers of arrows.

Yuddha Kanda 56.6

न स्थातुं वानराः शेकुः किं पुनर्योद्धमाहवे। अकम्पनशरैर्भग्ना सर्व एवाभिदुद्रुवुः॥

Thereat the monkeys could not so much as maintain their ground in the field, and how could they fight?

Yuddha Kanda 56.7

तान्मृत्युवशमापनानकम्पनशरानुगान्। समीक्ष्य हनुमाञ्ज्ञातीनुपतस्थे महाबलः॥ तं महाप्लवगं दृष्ट्वा सर्वे ते प्लवगर्षभाः। समेत्य समरे वीराः सहिताः पर्यवारयन्॥

Broken by the arrows of Akampana, they began to fly. and the exceedingly strong Hanumān, seeing his kindred come under the masterdom of Death and follow the course pursued by the shafts of Akampana, advanced (to the conflict). And seeing that mighty monkey, all those heroic prime monkeys together surrounded (Hanumān) in the field.

Yuddha Kanda 56.8

व्यवस्थितं हनूमन्तं ते दृष्ट्वा प्लवगर्षभाः। बभूवुर्बलवन्तो हि बलवन्तमुपाश्रिताः॥

Those best of monkeys, seeing Hanumán stay, grew strong by relying on that strong one.

Yuddha Kanda 56.9

अकम्पनस्तु शैलाभं हनूमन्तमवस्थितम्। महेन्द्र इव धाराभिः शरैरभिववर्ष ह॥

And even as the great Indra shower down rain, Akampana showered shafts on Hanuman resembling a mountain-summit in grandeur.

Yuddha Kanda 56.10

अचिन्तयित्वा बाणौघाशरीरे पातितान्कपिः। अकम्पनवधार्थाय मनो दध्ने महाबलः॥

And without casting a thought on the showers of arrows poured on his person, that monkey gifted with exceeding strength, set his heart on compassing the death of Akampana.

Yuddha Kanda 56.11

स प्रहस्य महातेजा हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः। अभिदुद्राव तद्रक्षः कम्पयन्निव मेदिनीम्॥

And laughing, that exceedingly energetic offspring of the Wind-god rushed after that Rākşasa, as if making the Earth herself tremble.

Yuddha Kanda 56.12

तस्याथ नर्दमानस्य दीप्यमानस्य तेजसा। बभूव रूपं दुर्धर्षं दीप्तस्येव विभावसोः॥

The form of that one roaring and flaming up in energy, was irresistible, like to the appearance of a flaming fire.

Yuddha Kanda 56.13

आत्मानं त्वप्रहरणं ज्ञात्वा क्रोधसमन्वितः। शैलमुत्पाटयामास वेगेन हरिपुंगवः॥

And thinking that he was unfurnished with any arms, that foremost of monkeys, waxing wroth, vehemently rooted up a hill.

Yuddha Kanda 56.14

गृहीत्वा सुमहाशैलं पाणिनैकेन मारुतिः। स विनद्य महानादं भ्रामयामास वीर्यवान्॥

And taking that huge hill, the Wind-god's son endowed with prowess, sending up a tremendous roar, began to whirl it with a single arm.

Yuddha Kanda 56.15

ततस्तमभिदुद्राव राक्षसेन्द्रमकम्पनम्। पुरा हि मनुचिं संख्ये वज्रेणेव पुरंदरः॥

As of yore Purandara had in encounter pursued Namuchi with the thunder-bolt, (Hanuman) pursued that best of RāksasasAkampana.

Yuddha Kanda 56.16

अकम्पनस्तु तदृष्ट्वा गिरिशृङ्ग समुद्यतम्। दूरादेव महाबाणैरर्धचन्द्रैरदारयत्॥

Akampana, seeing that uplifted crag, from a distance cut it off with mighty crescent-shaped shafts.

Yuddha Kanda 56.17

तं पर्वताग्रमाकाशे रक्षोबाणविदारितम्। विकीर्णं पतितं दृष्ट्वा हनूमान्क्रोधमूर्च्छितः॥

And finding that mountain top severed by the shafts of the Räksasa and scattered in pieces, Hanumān was seized with a mighty wrath.

Yuddha Kanda 56.18

सोऽश्वकर्ण समासाद्य रोषदान्वितो हरिः। तूर्णमुत्पाटयामास महागिरिमिवोच्छ्रितम्॥

That monkey, wrought up with rage and pride, grasping an Aśvakarņa elevated like to a hill, at once uprooted it.

Yuddha Kanda 56.19

तं गृहीत्वा महास्कन्धं सोऽश्वकर्णं महाद्युतिः। प्रगृह्य परया प्रीत्या भ्रामयामास भूतले॥

And taking that broad-shouldered Asvakarma, that one furnished with high splendour, with great glee whirled it above the ground.

Yuddha Kanda 56.20

प्रधावनुरुवेगेन बभञ्ज तरसा दुमान् । हनूमान्परमनुद्धश्चरणैर्दारयन्महीम्॥

Thereat rushing a main vehemently (Akampana) speedily broke the trees. And (seeing this) Hanumān, transported with passion, rived the earth with his kicks.

Yuddha Kanda 56.21

गजांश्च सगजारोहान्सरथारथिनस्तथा जघान हनुमान्भीमानराक्षसांश्च पदातिगान्॥

And Hanumān slaughtered elephants, and the riders thereof, and cars with their riders, and dreadful Rākṣasas and footmen.

Yuddha Kanda 56.22

तमन्तकमिव क्रुद्धं सदुमं प्राणहारिणम्। हनूमन्तमभिप्रेक्ष्य राक्षसा विप्रदुद्रुवुः॥

Seeing the enraged Hanumān resembling the Finisher armed with trees and destructive, the Rākşasas began to fly fast.

Yuddha Kanda 56.23

तमापतन्तं संक्रुद्धं राक्षसानां भयावहम्। ददर्शाकम्पनो वीरश्चक्षोभ च ननाद च ॥

Seeing that one enraged, terrific to the Rāks asas, the heroic Akampana was agitated greatly and sent up shouts.

Yuddha Kanda 56.24

स चतुर्दशभिर्बाणैर्निशितैर्देहदारणैः। निर्बिभेद महावीर्यं हनूमन्तमकम्पनः॥

Akampana pierced Hanumān endowed with exceeding prowess with four and ten shafts, sharpened and capable of cleaving the bodies of people.

Yuddha Kanda 56.25

स तथा विप्रकीर्णस्तु नाराचैः शितशक्तिभिः। हनूमान्ददृशे वीरः प्ररूढ इव सानुमान्॥

And thus covered with iron arrows and whetted darts, that hero Hanumân-looked like a hill covered with trees.

Yuddha Kanda 56.26

विरराज महावीर्यो महाकायो महाबलः। पुष्पिताशोकसंकाशो विधूम इव पावकः॥

That huge-bodied one endowed with wondrous prowess and great strength, appeared like a flowering Asoka or a fie without smoke.

Yuddha Kanda 56.27

ततोऽन्यं वृक्षमुत्पाट्य कृत्वा वेगमनुत्तमम्। शिरस्याभिजघानाशु राक्षसेन्द्रमकम्पनम्॥

Then uprooting another tree, (Hanuman) summoning up hi best impetuosity, swiftly hit Akampana foremost of Rākşasas-on the head.

Yuddha Kanda 56.28

स वृक्षेण हतस्तेन सक्रोधेन महात्मना। राक्षसो वानरेन्द्रेण पपात च ममार च॥

And slain with that tree by that high souled monkeys chief wrought up with passion that Raksasas fell down and died.

Yuddha Kanda 56.29

तं दृष्ट्वा निहतं भूमौ राक्षसेन्द्रमकम्पनम्। व्यथिता राक्षसाः सर्वे क्षितिकम्प इव दुमाः॥

Seeing that foremost of Rākşasas-Akampanaslain (and lying) on the ground, the Raksasa were extremely aggrieved, and (appeared)like trees in an earthquake.

Yuddha Kanda 56.30

त्यक्तप्रहरणाः सर्वे राक्षसास्ते पराजिताः। लङ्कामभिययुस्त्रासाद्वानरैस्तैरभिद्रुताः॥

And those Rākşasas defeated, leaving their arms behind, made for Lankā in fear, pursued by the monkeys.

Yuddha Kanda 56.31

ते मुक्तकेशाः संभ्रान्ता भग्नमानाः पराजिताः। भयाच्छ्रमजलैरङ्गैः प्रस्रवद्भिर्विदुद्रुवुः॥

And with their hair flowing loosely, (the Rāks asas), afflicted with affright, and dispirited and beaten, fled fast, with the water of fatigue running down their persons.

Yuddha Kanda 56.32

अयोन्यं ते प्रमनन्तो विविशुनगरं भयात्। पृष्ठतस्ते तु संमूढाः प्रेक्षमाणा मुहुर्मुहुः॥

And crushing down each other, they entered the city in a panic, momentarily casting their looks behind them.

Yuddha Kanda 56.33

तेषु लङ्कां प्रविष्टेषु राक्षसेषु महाबलाः। समेत्य हरयः सर्वे हनूमन्तमपूजयन्॥

When the Rákşasas had entered Lankā, the exceedingly mighty monkeys, assembled together, paid homage to Hanuman.

Yuddha Kanda 56.34

सोऽपि प्रवृद्धस्तान्सर्वान्हरीन्संप्रेत्यपूजयत्। हनूमान्सत्त्वसंपन्नो यथार्हमनुकूलतः॥

And Hanumăn, gifted with strength, honoured the seniors each as he deserved in consideration of his lineage.

Yuddha Kanda 56.35

विनेदुश्च यथाप्राणं हरयो जितकाशिनः। चकृषुश्च पुनस्तत्र सप्राणानेव राक्षसान्॥

The monkeys eager for victory shouted with might and main, and began to drag the Rākşasas with the view of taking their lives.

Yuddha Kanda 56.36

स वीरशोभामभजन्महाकपिः समेत्य रक्षांसि निहत्य मारुतिः। महासुरं भीमममित्रनाशनं विष्णुर्यथैवोरुबलं चमूमुखे॥ अपूजयन्देवगणास्तदा कपि स्वयं च रामोतिबलश्च लक्ष्मणः। तथैव सुग्रीवमुखाः प्लवंगमा विभीषणश्चैव महाबलस्तदा॥

That mighty monkey-son to the Wind godhaving destroyed the Rākşasas and arrived (in the midst of the host), attained heroic glory, even as did Vişnu, having slain that destroyer of enemies-the mighty and dreadful Asura possessed of exceeding strength, stationed in the ban of the forces. And then the deities and Rāma himself and the highly powerful Lakşmaņa, also the monkeys headed by Sugrīva, and Vibhīşaņa endowed with great strength, honoured that monkey.

Yuddha Kanda 56.37
